2006 Deer Harvest Information

The IDNR is reporting that Fulton County Harvested 278 antlerless deer during the 2007 Three Day Late Winter Antlerless Only Deer Gun Seasons! This is an increase of 130 deer from the 148 deer taken during 2006 Late Winter Season.

Fulton County ranked fourth in harvested deer during the late winter season. Pike County lead with (559) followed by Jefferson with (328), Randolph with (287), Fulton (278) and Wayne with (271). The totals for the State during the 2006/2007 Late Season were 9,075 deer. this was up almost 4,000 deer from the 2005/2006 late winter season harvest of 5,128 deer. It will be interesting to see what the impact this harvest will have on the 2007/2008 state estimated deer herd numbers.

Fulton County Archery Deer Hunters harvested 1,566 deer during the 2006/2007 archery season. This was one deer shy of the 2005/2006 archery season total of 1,577 deer. Overall Fulton County finished second in the state almost 3,000 deer behind Pike's record breaking harvest of 4,248 deer during the 2006/2007 archery season. This is the second straight year that Pike county archers have taken over 4,000 deer. This is also the second straight year that Pike county bowhunters have harvested more deer than the gun hunters in Pike County. During the 2006/2007 gun season Pike county gun hunters harvested 3,795 deer. It truly is an amazing statistic when you consider that bowhunting accounted for the most harvested deer in the top deer county in Illinois!

The top counties for the 2006/2007 archery season were: Pike (4,248), Fulton (1,556), Jefferson (1,513), Adams (1,481) and Peoria (1,391). Congratulations to all of the Illinois deer hunters on a fine season.

Re: top deer countys in ILL

Interesting numbers. I am a little worried on the number of anterless deer taken in the late season. I know of a few guys that took what they thought were does and turned out to be bucks. I am mainly a bow hunter and do all my hunting in Jefferson County. Guess we will have to wait to see what happens next year.

Thanks for the numbers Hoss! I wish I could have added to the Wayne County total,

If there were a category for missed does, I would be in that one!! LOL....

Re: top deer countys in ILL

No doubt Pike is always at the top.

This years numbers are hard to believe all around. We hunt in Montgomery county, and our groups harvest was half what it has been the last 4 years.During gun season we usually here a lot of shots, but that was way down this year too.Our second season and the late firearm season had terrible weather too with lots of rain and freezing rain.

Your right Rad,I'm sure quite a few bucks that had shed were taken.I wish they would move that season up 2 or 3 weeks.

Re: top deer countys in ILL

I agree with you MUDRNNER. I mainly bow hunt like i said. So it would kinda ruin one of my weekends to hunt, but usually i am tagged out by then anyhow. It would be worth loosing a weekend of hunting to me to know that it could raise the buck count. I had a pretty good year and did my share of harvesting does. 3 to be exact.

I think most counties in IL are pretty populated and have big deer. I have hunted all over the state and it seems that there is always a big one being taken. My buddy and I put the hurt on one field in jackson County this year. We took 10 deer with all but 1 being does, there are still alot of deer in the field.

Re: top deer countys in ILL

Pike Countys numbers are big for a few reasons. Pike is one of the biggest counties in the state, more hunters, more out of state hunters. Bordering counties of Adams, Brown & Calhoun have just as big of bucks but don't get the numbers & recognition of Pike because they are not as big of a county. Especially with Brown county. They have some excellent deer hunting. Some great bucks up there, seem to have a higher number of non-typical bucks also, don't know why. Brown county is probably one ofthe smallest counties in the state. Pike is probably at least 75% leased,(I would guess probably higher than that don't know of any stats on that though) either by outfitters or private individuals leasing for a place to hunt. I lease ground for my boys & I, also have a couple buddies that have ground that let me hunt. It is vry hard for locals to hunt anymore. I can remember the day when I could hunt about anywhere in the county. I sure do miss those days. Things have changed though. Deer hunting is big business now, years ago nobody around here thought anything about deer hunting being like it is now. I am one of the fortunate ones to still have places to hunt. I plan on keeping them so my boys will continue to be able to hunt.
