yeah but i didn't think the cv joint would break if he wasn't in 4 wheel drive and he never said he had 4 wheel drive so i was thinking it was in the steering column.

Think he said it was a Z-71. Never seen a Z-71 that was not 4wd. CV joints go bad, not necessarily break when they do not get proper lube or run dry. They will pop and make noises, as the front wheels are turning even out of 4wd, if I am not mistaken those joints do still turn with the wheels turning even when the vehicle does not have 4wd engaged. If a boot gets torn, which does happen, a cv joint can prematurely get worn.

Would have to agree though that the fix mentioned above for the steering column sounds like it should solve THIS problem. Dont think I would wait a year if it were me though.

This is true on vehicles with lockout hubs, but on 4WD IFS trucks their are no lockout hubs so the CV's turn constantly. If the CV was damaged in 4WD,you would still feel it in 2WD.

William is correct, GM never made a Z71 2 wheel drive version of their pick-ups. The Z71 models came with skid plates and better shocks as part of the Z71 off road package. Plus you got that fancy sticker in place of the 4x4 sticker on the back of the bed.

As for a ripped boot, you can't simply install a new one. The inside of the joint is damaged as moisture and dirt have contaminated the joint and is causing wear to it. If you replace the boot please inspect all the joint components in the CV, you will see 6 balls, a cage, and an inner race. If you see pitting there and material missing you need to have it replaced. CV's also take special grease so don't add something that is not intended for CV joints. GM uses a grease with a code of 5389. It is green in color and can withstand the heat that this joint takes.

If its the inboard joint, the one going to the differential (thanks for correcting LETMGROW) on my mistake in the past post, was typing too fast smile.gif inside of that joint you have needle bearings and something called a trunnion. You could have some needles breaking and causing the problem.

The best bet is if it is the CV joint or what we call the halfshaft, is to replace it with a new one. I am not confident with the reman ones out there as you may be better with a junkyard GM one that some company that is making rebuilt ones and doing little to make them like new again. There is something to be said about genuine replacement parts.

Good luck and I hope its not the CV joints as we don't have problems with them normally.

And yes the CV joints are spinning up front even with the 4 wheel drive off. They are designed that way as the CV goes into your wheel hub assembly.
