nice pics!! How thick is the ice before you guys go out on it??

All depends on the lake. I know Golden lake and the Bonnechere River (in the pic) like the back of my hand. So 2 1/2 to 3" is plenty to walk on, fish, skate on. that's about how much was in those pics... I won't take my snowmobile on until there's at least 6", and I don't take the truck on it until there's at least 14-16". Mind you other lakes that I don't know the current flows, I wait until there's a good 4-5" before I even walk on them, there could be 3" in one spot, and a 1/4" in the other. crazy.gif

Wow, that's clear ice!

Sure is! The water is crystal clear in this area. I can go out and find the dropoff without even chopping a hole in the ice to check the depth! grin.gif That's when there's no snow on the ice. wink.gif

Re: Pics from mid-January

Yup, when you cut a hole and the water comes up it makes the ice look a lot thinner than it actually is. There can be a foot of ice and you look down the hole and it only looks like there's about 6 inches. blush.gifgrin.gif

And yes, the girls had a blast on the skates, and got a kick out of cousin Shaun trying to run and get traction to the holes when we got a bite. I must have fell on my rear end a dozen times. crazy.gifgrin.gif
