I got a Mossberg 835 and was just wondering what chokes are ya'll shooting out of this gun and also what ammo....

I have the stock choke that comes with 835 and recently bought a jellyhead for the 835... i have yet to pattern it, and was just wondering what loads worked well with gun/choke combo...

Re: 835; Shells and Chokes

For my 835, I bought three chokes plus the factory choke, also got three different sizes of shot, #4, #5, and #6's. All three sizes were bought from Federal, and Winchester. I also bought two boxes of hevi-shot from Remington, #5, and #6's. 8 boxes of shells total!

Tested all the chokes I could with the hevi-shot first. Then went on to test the other three chokes with whatever I could shoot through. In my gun, it liked the Comp-N-Choke XXX Full, with Winchester Supremes HV 3.5" #6 the best at 40 yards! But that's my gun! Comp-N-Choke XXX FULL will not handle hevi-shot!

The process can and will be expensive! But you will never know what your gun is capable of shooting unless you go through the process! It helps if you have a few friends that have chokes to test on your gun. Also, buy a few rounds from them! Then head to the patterning board! Good luck!

Re: 835; Shells and Chokes

Congrats on the purchase, that gun will serve you well. I have had a 835 since about 90 and it is a BEAST. My workhorse gun. Like it soo much last week I bought another...all black and up to date from the factory.

I have had good sucess with " The Undertaker" choke tube which is non ported, killed alot of turkeys with it. Winchester supreme 3 1/2" #5's. I have since let my son use that gun and put in a Kicks ported choke.690 ( the earlier 835's weren't ported) so he could shoot he magnums with some relief. He nailed a big tom last year year with it , again using winchester supreme 3" #6's.

I have only used the factory tubes in modified and improved cyl. They do OK when shooting crows and other birds. In the field, Federal field loads 7 1/2's.

It took me a while to find out what worked best and for what. Good luck!

835 sights and barrel rust

Have any of you all had problems with your 835's sights?

I bought one turkey camo model 835 from Bass Pro Shops last fall and found the rear fiber optic sight loose when I opened the box at home. Nothing I've tried has tightened it down sufficiently, still wiggles.

I also found rust in the barrel upon getting it home. Considering sending back to Mossberg for work or replacement. I've cleaned it several times but still can't seem to get all of the rust out.

Any suggestions on the sights or rust would be greatly appreciated.

Re: 835 sights and barrel rust

I believe Tru -Glo makes the sights for Mossberg and they stand behind their products. Give them a e-mail and they should be able to help you.

My Mossberg 835 just went back to Mossberg in Texas to repair the safety which would not engage. While it's there, I am having them port it and install the current crop of fiber sights.

As far as rust...you should ZERO in a NEW gun. Talk to the store where you bought it, Bass pro should stand behind what they sell.
