Callin' all deer

OK, one season under my belt with a total of three does, zero bucks. I use the "can", rattle bags and antlers, buck grunt tubes. But am I doing it right? Or just sounding like a fool out there in the woods?

Is there a dvd anywhere that actually shows how to use these things? I've watched the shows and learned from them but...a dvd would be great or even a web site that has the actual sounds the way they are supposed to sound.

Conrats on all the does! Ask your hunting buddies if it sounds ok. There's not much to rattlin' antlers or blowing on a grunt tube or the can! Ask anyone who you know that hunts if it sounds alright! I'm sure you'll be alright!

Re: Callin\' all deer

Congratulations on the does.

You can overcall and screw up an area. Calling will also be effected by the ratios and numbers of deer in the area overall. That said, I have learned most of my techniques and what does and does not work through trial and error and remembering what does and does not work. A good practice I have found for blind calling around the pre rut on into the rut is to use series of 3-4 short grunts at 15-20 minute intervals. Have called in more bucks that way than with any other calling tactic. Rattling can be effective around the same time. The can call and estrous bleats and other blats I have still had somewhat mixed results and have had more curious does respond than I have had bucks.

I have called in a lot of deer with the can in all parts of the season. Pre-rut blind rattling has been somewhat effective.

A little bit goes a long way. A lot seems to run the deer off. You would be supprised how far a deer can hear a very quiet call or very soft rattling.

Matching your calling to the stage of the breeding season is important. Also, never call too much when deer are close. Use them to draw deer from a distance, but when the deer reacts to the calls, don't call too much, they will pinpoint your location and get spooked when they don't see the deer that they hear.

Re: Callin\' all deer

you know ive come to the conclusion that the deer are honestly getting call shy in the area i hunt, grunt calls and rattling works great on attracting 2 year old deer but ive never seen a mature deer come running to the horns, and ive actually had mature bucks spook when i let out the slightest grunt with my call, the only thing i blind call with is the can, and i only bring my grunt call if nothing else works when i see a buck thats outa range, ill give it a try but it usually makes the buck ease off or flat out run away. I think they just have gotten used to getting grunted at so much that they dont even wanna hear it. The only way mature bucks are taken in my area is being in the right place at the right time, they do not follow any normal logic that the other deer use, they are on theyre own schedule, on their own terms

Thanks again all for your opinions and advice. I appreciate each post. I did find that Primos makes a dvd entitled Mastering the art of deer calling
