I really like the Montecs. Absolutely nothing to fail on them since they're a solid piece of steel. I also think they have some of the best flight characteristics, at least on my setup, of any broadhead. Yes, if you plan on reusing them after you've made a kill, you will need to sharpen them.

Ditto .... I've been shooting Montecs for a few years now and love them. I got the Montes diamond sharpening stone too, and don't mind sharpening at all (Beats buying blades)

I've never tried the Sonics

Anthony, You still need to shoot the broadheads before you hunt with them. Unless your bow is perfectly tuned they more than likely will not hit the exact same spot.

Re: Broad Heads... * Montec or Sonic *

I replied to a post that was on here back in Oct. and sent for some free sonic heads. Shooting them out of my bow they flew just like field tips, but I had somewhat of a bad experience with them. I put one on my Gold Tip and yes i killed a buck with it, and to make a long story short the buck broke my arrow on a tree, and when I field dressed my buck the main shaft of the broadhead that holds the blades had broke off at the base and lost everything except for the shaft that threads down into the insert. There was meat that was packed down into the insert telling me that it went through the deer with a blunt end after it broke off at probably the ribs or something!! Needless to say, I wasn't too impressed. I will be sticking to my spitfires! Hopes this helps!

Re: Broad Heads... * Montec or Sonic *

I have shot the Montec for several seasons and they are a great broadhead. The only issue I had with them was the sharpness straight out of the package. Last year I switched to the Striker (also made by G5) they fly like the montec but have the replaceable blades. I have heard that G5 made some changes and that ther Montecs are now sharper out of the package, I will be checking that out at an upcoming show I'm going to. After that I will decide if I will shoot the montec or the striker this next season.

I have the hand held sharpener and it does a good job.

As for the sonics, i have never shot them and I never will. I have a problem with some of the advertising claims they have made and won't support them.

Re: Broad Heads... * Montec or Sonic *

I believe both are good heads. Both flew just like my field points and didn't have any dear I shot not die within 50yrds, but I just prefer a larger cutting diameter. So I tried the new Crimson Talons this last year and was very impressed. They actually flew a few fps faster than my field tips and hit a little higher on the target also. (about 4 inches at 40yrds)

And that cut a heck of a hole in all three deer and the turkey I shot this past season. The turkey bled out within 30 yrds.

Re: Broad Heads... * Montec or Sonic *

I used the Montecs in Africa this past Aug and killed a big Kudu that weighed over 700lbs with one. I got full penetration from a 70lb bow in spite of connecting with a very heavy rib bone. Can't ask for better results from a broadhead IMO.

I have not used the Sonics but their short length and steep entry angle makes me nervous. Probably not a big deal with poundage over 65 and deer sized game but I might think twice about shooting a big wild porker with one. In fact I think I'd rather let someone else try it. The short design is what gives the Sonics their flight advantage as that really helps them get close to field point accuracy. But don't blindly count on it being exactly the same.

Never used the Montecs G5's. I've shot the Strickers and they are good heads.

I was hunting this past year with Sonics for the first time and got to say WOW. They are a smaller head, but fly exceptionally well. I was lucky enough to take three deer with them this year. Excellent heads IMO. cool.gif

?? Can you explain this a little better. They would fly the same at animals as they did at targets. Did you just not like the penetration/blood trail/ what?

It was just one of his personal experiences with the broadhead. I've seen a lot of people come out with some fine animals from these broadheads.

yep I can explain ... they fly just fine like I said ... the penetration is fine ... I shot a doe double lung at 20 yards ... absolutely no blood not a drop ... found her 25 yrds away ... shot a buck 40 yards away clean pass through very little blood lost that deer very first deer I lost ... the blades are very sussptable to nicks not a very well made blade as far as durability ... also I had a ferel bend on one of the broadheads ... no explanstion for the bending either ... for the heads being made of aircraft metal I wasnt impressed ... I didnt shoot plywood or anything like that just the target in my back yard ... now on a positive ... I shot my first robinhood with the sonics ... but robinhoods dont put food on the tables ...

BTH,

Your post caused me to remember something. A buddy of mine tried the Sonics. Specifically this has to do with the blade durability problems you experienced. He said he actually managed to accidently bend the tip over on one of them. He said it bent merely by pushing it the quiver too hard! That's a problem that can be fixed and I hope they have.
