Hardaway banned for gay comments

Did you all see where Tim Hardaway was banned from the NBA all star game because of the comments he made about gays? Seems like if you are against homosexuality then there's something wrong with you and they call you homophobic confused.gif Seems like you can't have your own opinion anymore and when someone gets tired of having this sin thrown up as being normal or an "Alternative lifestyle" then they are looked down on. I mean, isn't this America where we supposed to be free? Free to think and have our own opinions.

Did you guys even here what he said? He said he HATED gay people. Nobody should hate anybody. Personally, I find homosexuality disgusting and sinful but I don't hate them. I hate the act not the person.

I agree 100%. Being against homosexuality and HATING Homosexuals is 2 separate issues.

Re: Hardaway banned for gay comments

This coming off the end of the dixie chicks discussion. Seems with freedom of speech there are maybe some double standards of sorts, and some have expectations on what they should and should not say while others can get away with saying whatever they want. Go figure. Sometimes a little discretion goes a long ways.

I have to agree with Steve here with what he said, being against something and hating those involved in it are two different issues.

I agree with this 100%, as well.

BUT.........That still should not prevent someone from speaking his mind. Whether you agree with what is said or not............whether you agree with how it is said or not. A person is constitutionally guaranteed the right to say what's on his mind. How he's viewed & judged for his comments is also the freedom of everyone who hears him.

Re: Hardaway banned for gay comments

It seems funny that in a climate where we are supposed to respect everyones veiws that not a single person has said that Hardawy has the right to feel the way he wants.

I don't think we should hate anyone. I pretty much agree with everything else he said and I'll bet you that if they were put in a room alone with thier closest friend, 99% of the guys speeking out against Hardawy would too. Never in public though.

I hate people who hate people..........but they don't scare me.

Homophobia is a FEAR of Homosexuals............

If Homosexuality Scares you.............you might have issues. I know God has issues with it.

At least Tim isn't afraid of speaking his mind, for a day or two.

Re: Hardaway banned for gay comments

Tim Hardaway can feel however he wants to feel about homosexuality, and he can even say he is against it and doesn't believe in it, but there is a line that can be crossed between intelligent, thoughtful debate, and downright hate and nastiness, which is what Hardaway displayed. The NBA, as a private entity, can ban him from whatever they want, because in the end, isn't that their right also, they are a business, in the business of making billions every year, and statements like those that Hardaway made, are bad for business.

Anyone remember the comments John Rocker made in an interview for Sports Illustrated, pretty blatant hate speech if I recall.

Disagreeing with an issue or lifestyle is one thing, but displaying your ignorance and speaking out of hate is a whole other ballgame.

So now he becomes the pete rose of basketball, all because the league wants to establish that there is nothing wrong with being gay........ hopefully if he deserves to be in the HOF they don't keep him out just because he dislikes gay people.

Re: Hardaway banned for gay comments

Now, most of you fellas know me as a fairly liberal guy, even though I consider myself a moderate, but considering the majority voice on these forums seems to be ultra-conservative, a moderate opinion can seem fairly liberal.

Most of ya'll know that I am a big proponent of free speech, but I also believe that there should be some limits to what is considered "free speech." Hate speech is not free speech. Am I upset by the comments he made, yes I am, but I would be just as upset if he made the same comments in regards to Christians, Whites, Muslims, Hispanics, etc. etc.

How many on here, who defend his right to say hateful, denegrating things about gays, would be so quick to defend him if he said that he hated white people, or hunters, or Christians. I would go so far as to say that the entire atmosphere of this thread would be completely different.

Free speech does not give the right to yell "FIRE" in a crowded room, nor does it give the right to denegrate a human being based on their lifestyle, or color, or race. While you may not agree with a certain lifestyle, those living it are human beings also, with feelings as well.

Would tend to agree with this, and while Hardaway and pretty well anyone in the public eye for that matter has every right to think what they wish, they should be a little cautious about how they present themselves with the comments they makes in public.
