Any Pecan farmers?????

I have a bunch of pecan trees on my new land so the girls and I decided to go pick a few today. I probably have at least 20 natives and 1/2 dozen of paper shell trees. We picked a big bag of natives but unfortunately every paper shell pecan---and there were thousands---all had worms. The natives did not have the worms. So my question is: what can I do to prevent this worm infestation in the future other than spraying. And if spraying is the only prevention what time of year is the best time to spray and with what. Here are the girls having fun picking pecans. Before we were done we ended up having pecan wars with each other so a good 1/4 of the pecans became bombs.

thanks for the advise

Cute little buggers, them pecan pickers are!!! grin.gif

Sorry to hear about the bum luck with your paper shells. I know absolutely nothing about pests in pecans. But if you'd wanna send me a peck of them natives, I'd be happy to open each one and "inspect" them for any other types of infestations. grin.gifsmirk.gifgrin.gif

Re: Any Pecan farmers?????

I would think they make some insecticide for the worms. I have no idea what it would be but there are far to many pecan orchards around here for worms to be a problem. Call your local green house.

We have a couple of native pecan trees. The small one put on a nice crop but I have one HUGE tree and it was very limited. They are the best pecans but they are tiny. Luckily the wifes grandma loves to pic them out..... She ended up with all of them.

Hey Todd, I just called a local nursery. They said to call the Oklahoma State extension Service in Tulsa. They have a fax sheet the send over that has all of the information. You have to spray at a certain time and with a certain product to be really effective. I'm digging for the number. Ill post it if I have any luck.

Re: Any Pecan farmers?????

thanks guys---I have done a little more research on the problem--Starting around August first you need to spray the surrounding area with diazenon and then dust the trunk of the tree with seven dust---and repeat every 10 days for about 6 weeks--which will take care of 90% of the problems.

hey jeramie--that ou/duke game was great this weekend! too bad you guys couldn't hold on to that lead--would've been a great win for the big 12.

Re: Any Pecan farmers?????

Doggy, you won't believe this but I used to work for a guy that picked them. He had the shakers, pickers and all the good stuff. Just had to move the big sticks out of the way. You do have to spray. I thought it was before August, but just follow the info you have. confused.gif

I got paid $20 to eat one of those worms once.....easiest money I made in my life cool.gif Just tasted like a pecan, imagine that! grin.gif

Can't say that I've ever eaten a fresh pecan, let alone a fresh pecan worm....LOL

I wonder what a bag of pecans go for these days ??

PM me your address and I will send you a ziploc bag of Native Pecans for free. They are really small but they have the best flavor. You, of course, will have to pic them out yourself. grin.gif

Seriously, I have more on the ground right now. I need to pic them up so my horses wont eat them.....

Re: Any Pecan farmers?????

nope, not a farmer, but i will pick up hickory nuts.

we have a tree called the shagbark hickory which is a cousin of the pecan. they're hulls are extremely tough, but the nut is worth it.

don't know about pecans, but you can tell a good nut from a bad nut by a tell tale hole where the worm bores in.

another way to tell a good nut from a bad nut is to dunk them in water. if they float, they're bad. if they sink they might be good.

our local paper just ran an article about growing pecans up here. they suggested shaking the tree when the worms are looking for nuts, and also using some kind of pesticide.

good luck

Re: Any Pecan farmers?????

Your little helpers there sure are cute Todd. Dont know about a pesticide for em either. We dont have any pecan trees on our property at least not that I am aware of, but do have a ton of hickories and see a lot of em with the worm holes like Chris mentioned.

Wonder if malathion sprayed on the trees at the right time might help? Know they use malathion here for several types of pests.
