Actually, the benchrest guys were using the .222 Remington since its introduction in 1950. Droping back to the 30's and 40's the .219 Donaldson Wasp was the prominent BR cartridge. It was a wildcat based from the .219 Zipper factory cartridge. Since your first gun was the triple deuce, I will go with the .219 DW.

Hey I have shot guns exactly like those two. Oh it was those two. Actually Eric and I have several of these bench guns in .219 Donaldson Wasp. Those really long scopes are Unertyl scopes made in Pittsburgh, PA. These rifles, scopes and the caliber was the most popular east of the Mississippi. West of MS the 22-250 was king.
