Re: Mouth or call??

I would never use any call accept my own mouth call to stop a deer for a shot, and this is why.

When a deer has entered your shooting range and you want to stop it for a shot, you should already be at full fraw, when making the call, because many times the deer will stop dead in his tracks and look straight at you. If your not at full draw, or haven't even got the bow up yet, you have a real good chance of getting busted.

I always use a mouth call to stop em up. Sometimes they don't listen to the first one, so you have to wait until they are in another shooting lane or the right position and give em a louder nasally Maaa.

I don't ever leave it up to the deer to stop in the perfect spot. I make em stop where I want him to, while at full draw wink.gif

It's never failed me yet.

I have used mouth until I got an Away Outdoors easy grunter. The tube is always right there, and it is easy to grunt and then release.

I do the same but modified it some, I thought the rubber tube from the mouth to the call was too short and got a longer one.

Works great and it works!

Re: Mouth or call??

I've tried all sorts of buck grunts and calls. I want my hands free and ready when it's time. So I have taken to drinking root beer before every hunt. It makes for instant and at will belching. And my belchs have worked for getting them in AND stopping them in a lane. Call Ripleys...believe it or not???...!!!

Re: Mouth or call??

I'll probably get crucified for this one, but I don't stop him. I'll let him do it himself or I'll take the shot. Of course if he's zipping along fast I won't, but a casual walk at most of the distances I shoot I don't want to do anything to alert the critter. Most of my bow kills are at 20 or under. There's really no need to stop him in my opinion. He much less likely to drop or duck if he's walking than he is if I alert him and he stops. Very rare a deer will slip by without offering a shot within range. I just don't like calling attention to myself with some noise.
