unioncountyslayer
Just curious of what I could expect to pay a local dealer to transfer a rifle for me. I found a rifle I would like to buy but it is out of state and I would have to have it shipped to a dealer. What's the going rate to have them transfer it to me? AJ
Re: FFL Transfer Fee Click on this link and plug in your zip code. Transfer fees run anywhere from $15 up to a percentage of the cost of the gun. It all depends on the FFL holder. This is something to keep in mind when buying a gun online. Remember to add in shipping, FFL transfer, and NICS to the price. What may seem like a good deal can quickly become a not so good deal when its done nickle and dimeing the added costs. HarvDog
Re: FFL Transfer Fee Good website AJ. Thanks for the information. Given this...I have found that there are several places in my area who charge around $20.
NEIOWAARCHER
Re: FFL Transfer Fee Usally $10 to $20 around here. I charge $15 to do it if you buy one at one of our auctions.
bowana
Re: FFL Transfer Fee I charge a flat fee of $25. I charge nothing for Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation or Lifetime NRA members.

I am thinking of the time you invest etc.
snapper
Re: FFL Transfer Fee If someone buys the gun from me...I charge nothing. If its bought online or transfering from one person to the next...for a friend $10...anyone else $20. Seems the going rate around here is $25....the NICS check is $5. I really don't know why some of these folks charge $25-$50 to do the background check...it isn't tough work...lol.
bowana
Re: FFL Transfer Fee Gotta cover the overhead. Its a service provided by a licensed entity. It cost money just to possess these FFL's. To answer the other question; I'm an advid supporter and life member of the NRA. I'm also a Habitat Partner and life member with RMEF. I tend to lean toward anyone involved with these folks.
Jeramie
Re: FFL Transfer Fee I have a guy by the house that charges me $10. In Tulsa its nothing to reach $50-$

To just transfer/background check....it doesn't take much time and not alot of ink to fill out the paper...$50-$60 is outragous!
AJ
Re: FFL Transfer Fee I know of a few gun shops in Kalifornina that charged 10% of the value of the gun to do transfers. Basically they did not want to deal with it if they were not selling it. There is also a 10 day waiting period for all guns there. So I guess it will cover storing the gun also. bowana
Re: FFL Transfer Fee Transfers can be a catch22. Lets say this guy has a rifle shipped in. The rifle is paid for. You run the check...then wa la. Its denied. Its happened. Big pain in the you know what. Next thing you know his buddy walks in he wants to buy it for him.......straw purchase can't do. Now you have a rifle in your register that does not belong to you and you hope the guy can sell it to someone else thats on the up and up. Now its a grey area and you have to make sure the gun is legit or the ATF will do it for you.

LETMGROW
Re: FFL Transfer Fee Seems like there is always a risk involved. How do you know the shipper is legit? The time is important to most shop owners. While he or she is doing paperwork for a transfer they could be waiting on a customer who wants to buy something. The FFL license is the life blood of a dealer and not to be taken lightly. It is also expensive to renew and maintain. Granted the forms don't take that long to fill out, but how many folks would just get the forms and not want to talk about the great deal they got, where it came from etc. This also takes up a lot of time for the dealer. Not every dealer will even do this. I understand why!
AJ
Re: FFL Transfer Fee If you figure it takes 15 minutes to do the paperwork and NICS, a dealer charging $25 for the transfer is making a $100/hr rate.
LETMGROW
Re: FFL Transfer Fee Considering the dealer holds the license and liability, along with providing a place to do business, and all the other associated overhead costs, I think $ 25 would be more than fair. snapper
Re: FFL Transfer Fee I make sure I know the person who is buying the gun...and make sure they know that there is a prob. if they are denied. The gun can't leave my shop...I could be wrong...but I think there is a way for a person to find out if they would pass a background check first. In my experience...folks buying guns online or out of state, know whether or not they'll pass before buying a gun! [ QUOTE ] Granted the forms don't take that long to fill out, but how many folks would just get the forms and not want to talk about the great deal they got, where it came from etc. This also takes up a lot of time for the dealer. Not every dealer will even do this. I understand why! [/ QUOTE ] I would do this all day if there were enough folks wanting it done. The buyer does most of the paper work...I fill out a small section and punch some #'s in the phone. In most cases...everything is done in about 10 mins. It usally takes the buyer longer to fill out his/her section than it does to the NICS check. Straw purchases are very grey...its ultimately up to the FFL holder to decide to sell the gun to the "next" guy.
Adjam5
Re: FFL Transfer Fee If a buy was gonna take place...would it be prudent to run the NICS BEFORE the shipping of the gun is done? That way if there is a denial, its just a few calls that were made and not a nightmare of a purchase and paperwork for the dealer. Is that feasible? Also...is it up to a FFL holder to charge for a transfer? Can they do it for free? Or is it a mandatory fee that the gov't charges for the NICS check? Thanks. snapper
Re: FFL Transfer Fee I'm not sure if one can do a NICS check beforehand? I would think you should be able too...but just don't know. Only fee that I know of that is mandatory is what the FFL holder gets charged for doing the NICS check ($5). I would think it would be up to the FFL holder if he/she chooses to do it for free or what ever. Best of my knowledge...there is no "mandatory" fee. smallmunster
Re: FFL Transfer Fee Here in Iowa you can get a permit to buy from the Sheriff. I got mine the other day and it was $5. They run the background check and it is good for a year. Then the FFL dealer can just use that instead of calling in.
