Squirrelhunter91
What does everyone plant for their first planting in the spring? I intend on making a little foodplot for myself to hunt over this year and I don't know what to plant. The spot is 20 by 40 yards at most and has never been tilled before. We will do a soil test this year though, but I still don't know what exactly to plant. Also, should I do another planting in September or so? deerslayer79
Re: Spring Plantings - Whatcha gonna plant? something that size your going to have some over grazing problems when the deer lock onto it as a food source. If I was you I would try some Durana clover, try to isolate it somehow until it is up and well established, then let them eat. wtnhunt
Re: Spring Plantings - Whatcha gonna plant? Will be planting bean and peas mixed with sorghum here Joe a little later in the spring. Will most likely also plant some corn this year as well. wtnhunt
Re: Spring Plantings - Whatcha gonna plant? Forgot about my oldest daughters plot. Will be helping her with planting a 1/4 acre plot here as part of a 4h program, thinking it is likely going to be a clover blend. Usually prefer to plant our clovers in the fall here. Squirrelhunter91
Re: Spring Plantings - Whatcha gonna plant? deerslayer, I really doubt I'll have overgrazing problems. There are I think 5 deer per square mile around there. My dad will also have a small plot about that size 100 yards away or so.
Strut10
Re: Spring Plantings - Whatcha gonna plant? I'm going to frost-seed some clover into a few places in my plot where it came up a little thin. That's all I'm doing early.

bowhtr1
Re: Spring Plantings - Whatcha gonna plant? Last fall I planted several clover plots with cool season and warm season clover mixed in. I will just put out fertilizer and bushhog them down some. The other plots will have Lab Lab and American joint vetch mixed. I will have some corn in there also to allow the lab lab and vetch to grow on. Thats all this year. LETMGROW
Re: Spring Plantings - Whatcha gonna plant? If I were to plant a small food plot I would use the Plotsaver tape and spray to let the plot get established. This will prevent overgrazing! Born2Hunt
Re: Spring Plantings - Whatcha gonna plant? Joe, you may not think overgrazing is an issue but it will be. When we planted our imperial clover we went from seeing 5-6 deer every other day to seeing 40-45 deer per day. I didn't think there was that many deer in our area either. Rhino
Re: Spring Plantings - Whatcha gonna plant? We are planting cowpeas and alyce clover in 12 of our food plots that total 23 acres. That's about 1/2 of the food plots we plant for the fall crop.
RangerClay
Re: Spring Plantings - Whatcha gonna plant? We have two foodplots. One at home and one at camp. The plot at camp is going to get clover. I am also going to try some of the Winter Greens at camp to see if the deer like it. My home food plot is still up in the air. I want to try something new but I am not sure what I am going to do yet.

I'm looking for something that will really grab their attention.
wtnhunt
Re: Spring Plantings - Whatcha gonna plant? Have personally had great results with clovers particularly clovers planted in the fall, with a bit of wintergrazer rye grain in the blend. The rye and wheat we planted last fall for erosion control, currently continues to look like it has been being mowed with a lawnmower about 4-5 inches high. Never see deer in those spots, but no doubt they are there.
QDMAworks4me
Re: Spring Plantings - Whatcha gonna plant? We are going to plant corn, and either winter greens or shot plot again. This will go along with our already growing clover and alfalfa. I can not wait for the snow to melt so we can get started

They planted all the alfalfa so I am not sure what they pay per bag. We plant everything else ourselves. They do a 4 year rotations, 4 years alfalfa and 4 years of corn.
