A Ruffed Grouse that is! I've only gotten 1 other Ruffed Grouse in my almost 8 years of hunting. I drove to a piece of state land today...small piece about 15 minutes from home. It looks very promising for sheds, didn't find any, but with all the sign of the deer in the apple trees and pines, there has to be a shed under the 2 feet of snow there.

So back to getting a Grouse. I had seen grouse in there before. I have my shogun and keep walking around. If I go off a deer trail, the snow is past my knees. I hiked for over an hour with no luck and my legs were getting really tired. I found some fresh grouse tracks but no grouse. I come up to a big snow covered log on the ground, pause and then I hear a grouse take off under the log! It turns and flies through the trees about 20 yards in front of me and BOOM! I take a shot. I was assuming I missed as there was a bunch of small beech saplings in the way but I went over to where I shot at it to check anyway. I get there and find a few feathers on the ground. I'm thinking "hmm....I didn't miss afterall. Must have just grazed it but it must be near by) I walk ahead finding a few more feather, turn towards this snow covered pile of brush and there is a dead grouse in the snow!!!!!!!!!! I go "Oh my gosh, I got it! Thank you Lord!" I jumped over the brush and took a couple photos, which are below. I could never be happier, especially since the season ends on Wednesday. and this came from state land and is my first wild game kill on state land grin.gif Wooohoo, guess what we are having as a side dish tomorrow night wink.gif I'm so pumped cool.gif It's a great feeling to be blessed and I'm so happy after not getting one or hunting them much since I last got. Woohoo smile.gif
