How come yous started hunting for deer? I'm brought up in a family of hunters so it kinda grew on me I guess. I got interested when I was 5 when my uncles used to go up north for a week at a time for deer season. I started going with my step-dad when I was 10. Then I finally turned 12 in 2002 and I got my first deer with a 30-30. A nice basket rack 6 point Whitetail. smile.gif

Re: What made you want to start deer hunting?

I was really young when I started and I just wanted to go with dad. Didn't matter where we went I just wanted to go too!! When I say young I couldn't hunt I just went along, he tied me to the tree so I wouldn't fall out, cause it never failed I would fall asleep, but some how I always was awaken just in time to see the deer and or turkeys. grin.gif

Now I'm obsessed with deer so...

But it all falls back to being with dad. smile.gif

Re: What made you want to start deer hunting?

I grew up watching my dad get up early on those cold November mornings and come back later in the day with a buck in the bed of his truck. He had always taken me rabbit and squirrel hunting but told me I had to learn patience before he would take me deer or turkey hunting. When I turned six years old he decided to let me tag along one morning. I remember him having to litererly push me twenty feet up a tree into a box stand. I was scared to death. It was high, dark and cold but when I reached the safety of the stand I calmed down and setteled in. Not long after the sun began to peak over the hillside my dad reached over and tapped me on the shoulder and said there was a doe heading straight towards us. I remeber I began to shake and breath heavily as I stood up and looked out the window. It was an adrenelin rush I'll never forget. Although my dad didn't shoot her I would have to say, up until that point in my young life, that was the coolest experience I had ever had and being able to share it with my favorite hero just made it iceing on the cake!

yep-in my blood I guess. My dad never hunted so my older brother and I were never really exposed to it.It's just something we wanted to do since we were little kids.We were always doing something in the outdoors-playing in creeks catching minnows and crawfish, making bows out of my mom's shrubs and trees. It was just a natural thing for us both.Forty yrs later,he's still my hunting partner and mentor to this day

Re: What made you want to start deer hunting?

I became interested in hunting because I'd see my father go off and come home every year since I was little with a deer. I just wanted to go hunting with dad all the time. Soon as I got old enough my father took me with a family friend and his nephew to take the Hunter's Safety Course and I've been hunting ever since. grin.gif

Re: What made you want to start deer hunting?

When I was about 16, worked with a guy who always talked about hunting. That really was what sparked my interest, but I never really had anyone to take me hunting. He would bring in smoked deer hams occasionally that were really good and tell me about different hunting stories. My step father was always into guns, and did a little hunting when I was a kid, but never anything serious, he was more into guns than the hunting. I learned some about guns from him, but we never went deer hunting. When we moved to Tennessee, I started hunting myself right here behind where our house is now. First couple years, did not know what I was doing, have sure learned alot since then.

My grandfather and father were both avid outdoorsman, loved anything to do with the outdoors, so guess it was in my blood, and even though I got a late start, it just seems natural now.

Re: What made you want to start deer hunting?

Actually, I think it was probably my entire childhood lifestyle that made me eventually interested in hunting. Farms were pretty far apart when I grew up, and after chores, school and homework, kids pretty well had to amuse themselves. For me this meant a lot of time spent around hills, creek and the swamp just wandering and exploring and building a complete fascination with nature. I doubt that my parents really knew where I was most of the time....lol.

I was running a trapline at the age of 11, and my brother and I used to do a lot of camping, and there was a creek nearby that got me into fishing. So during those formative years, outdoor recreation got pretty well engrained. When I was old enough, hunting was a natural activity for me to get involved in.

Re: What made you want to start deer hunting?

I wanted to be like Dad.He started bow hunting when I was pretty little, and bought me a little compound when I was about 9 or 10 and we would shoot together in the back yard.He would take me to the bow shop and to the woods to show me where his stands where and I just couldn't get enough of it.I started getting some shotgun experience when I was about 12 hunting rabbits, and when I was 14 my Grandpa and dad started taking me deer hunting with them.Dad passed away in 2000 and Grandpas 80 now,but still goes deer hunting and enjoys it just as much as he did when he started. No way I'll ever give it up,and I hope my kids enjoy it as much as I do when they get a little older.

Re: What made you want to start deer hunting?

Actually, my Dad wasn't around much when I was a young kid, he was off chasing the bottle, if you know what I mean. I lived with my Grandparents. It was kinda in the city, but Grandpa owned about 5 acres and he had three gardens. Me and Grandpa would hunt for groundhog. There was also a vacant lot just off of Grandpas' property. I can remember wandering through the thick woodlot following rabbit trails. There were trails made by the other local boys where they rode their bikes. I made it like a game, I would stalk the other kids and try not to be seen, so I was kinda hunting. Years later when Dad kicked his habit for good, and we moved from the city, we got into primitive Muzzleloading, I have always been interested in history. At 13, my Dad took me on my first deer hunt. Opening morning found me sitting in my homemade ladder stand, all of about 8 feet off the ground! Just after sunrise, a small 8 point came from the thicket and gave me a shot. One shot from my 50 cal flintlock was all it took. I was hooked!!

Re: What made you want to start deer hunting?

I grew up 20 miles outside of Chicago and "hunting" was simply known as "driveby shootings".

Now, as a retired guy who moved way out to western Illinois, I now know "hunting" in different terms and have started to really enjoy it.
