Watch out for the WalMart Fenwicks. I bought 2 a few years back, and they both broke within a years time.

The older Fenwicks were great, as are some of the more expensive ones. These were $50 on sale.

Yep. I bought a combo from Wal-Mart - Abu Garcia reel and Fenwick rod. Well, the rod broke four months later. No more Wal-Mart rods and reels for me.

Thanks for all of the replies. How would you guys compare these rods to st. croix rods, specifically st. croix's 'premier' series?

Re: Fenwick Rods

A high end Fenwick (HMG's,etc.) are going to be every bit as good as a St. Croix. I really like my 7ft. Fenwick HMG and I have two Fenwick muskie rods. The beauty that I have found is Fenwick has great customer service, I broke a tip on a 6.5 ft. Fenwick jigging rod and I called the company and they sent me a new rod. DSGB if you picked up a Fenwick at Walmart I would take it back, I have not seen them there, but either company should stand behind it.

What are you looking at spending? What are you planning on fishing, etc. Give us some details and someone may even have some other options. I love the G-Loomis rods for my walleye outings. I just started using some rods made by a guide from North Dakota that have been awesome for ice fishing, and I am anxious to see what he puts out come open water season. The biggest thing for me is....a quality rod WILL help you catch more fish, the end. Give some more details, but you can't go wrong with a higher end Fenwick or St. Croix

Re: Fenwick Rods

Are you fishing Depere? What are you looking for spinning, or casting. You really should have two different rods if you Pike and walleye fish. Unless ofcourse you are fishing Depere in the spring. Then get yourself a 6'6" or a 7' spinning rod. I'd personally go with a 7' St. Croix in Med. action with a fast tip. smile.gif

Re: Fenwick Rods

Yep, I love going up to Minocqua too. I fish on a smaller lake a little south of Minocqua in Hazelhurst. Along with the HMG by Fenwick, I'm also looking into the St. Croix Premier series (spinning). If anyone has any thoughts on this rod please post.

Re: Fenwick Rods

I have four fenwick rods from 6-7 ft spinning and casting. They are the lower end models from wally world. I paid about $15 each on clearance. Retail was $50. I have taken them to Alaska and Washington as well as using them here and have not had one problem. I caught a 20 pound shark on the 7' casting rod and it worked like a dream. Handled salmon on the kenai as well. I am a big fan.
