My Buck knife

So around my 21st birthday (3 years ago), I bought myself a blue handled Buck Whittaker Approach folding knife. It's cleaned quiet a few small game animals and deer...held it's sharpness really nice. Well the blade broke today. I won't say how or why...I know, and I was very saddened to find it this way. all I know is some one is going to be replacing my Buck knife. I know...you may think just a knife and it is just a knife, but knives do hold some sentimental value...all the animals and fish I've cleaned with it. I thought maybe I could try sending it to Buck and they might replace the blade but maybe not, since the broken blade is not exactly "accidental". Basically a good 1/4 -1/2 inch off the tip of the blade broke off. Guess it's a good thing I got to clean my rabbit last night with it. frown.gif Rest in Peace...lol

So anyone have a Buck knife and if so, what wone is it? I'll be looking for a new one, probably at Gander Mountain if I get there next week. Was just looking on the website and like the looks of the Bantam for around $20-$30. I want something good for cleaning animals and outdoors tasks like camping/backpacking....that type of stuff...

Re: My Buck knife

Was this the knife you originally had? [LINK] If so why not just get the same one? I like sticking with things I know I like and work good for what I use them for, unless you want to try something different this time around.

If you want to try something different what are you looking for in the knife. A lot of people have preferences to what types of knives they like working with. Do you want one with a gut hook or without? One with a serrated blade or without? Blade length? Folding or fixed?

We use only Buck and Kershaw knives in this family. wink.gif I personally dislike serrated blades and gut hooks. I also like a folding blade that's 2" or longer. That's just my personal preference though.

I liked my knife, but I think I want something with a little smaller grip, easier to hold especially when in the woods. Also I got this one with a serrated blade, but I think I'd like one not serrated...was always getting the serrations caught on wood/skin/bone etc...when I didn't want it. I know I want a folding/locking blade with about a blade at least 3" long. Lots of choices, lol

Well I'll admit, my sister, don't know what possessed her, threw it down the basement stairs and that is how it broke. Will they still replace it? blush.gif

That's the same reason I didn't care for the serrated blades they get hung up sometimes on things. The Buck Bantam has a nice grip and the BLW or BHW models have over 3" blades on them for a reasonable price. I think you can't go wrong with one of those. They should fit your hands better they are slimmer design. If you hold one and it's a bit too slim try looking at the Folding Alpha Hunters once. They are a lot more expensive though and might be out of your price range, but are a bit fatter blade and fatter handle with a similar shape to the Bantam's. They have non-gut hook versions of the Folding Alpha Hunters with 3" blades. If you go with the black ones they will cut the price down a lot on any of the buck knives. I always was fine with non-camo because I figured when I would have the knife out in the woods the animal is already dead and isn't going to run away if it sees my knife. Unless of course you intend to try knife hunting with Buckee. lol grin.gif Even if you get a new Buck knife I'd still try to see if the other one won't be fixed by Buck. Could always keep it as a backup. wink.gif

Re: My Buck knife

Have 3 buck knives Ruth. One is a folding knife, has a 3 1/2 or 4 inch blade which is 446c I really dont like it. The knife is similar to a gerber gator, but the handle on it feels cheap. It has a busted blade near the handle. Was really probably my fault it got busted, but should not have busted so easily. About 6 years ago or so after gutting a deer I was washing blood off of my hands and knives at a frost free hydrant and accidentally hit the blade of that knife on the hydrant when I was flinging the freezing cold water off my hands. That knife is the knife I use only for tarsal glands on deer from there on.

Have two buck filet knives in 6 and 9 inch blades I think. I do like those knives both. Use them alot during processing.

If it were me and I was looking at getting another folding knife, the gerber gator

Re: My Buck knife

These are 2 of the many knives in my collection. These have both been great knives and I have gotten a lot of use out of them over the years.

The Buck Lite is used on a daily basis. Both knives have a pocket clip which makes the even more handy. This one, Buck Lite II, http://www.buckknives.com/catalog/detail/266/238 is a slightly smaller version of the one I have that would probably good size for what you are looking for. I am very partial to Bucks. I have the same Buck pocket knife that my Dad gave me about 25 years ago. Just a couple ideas for you.
