Texan_Til_I_Die
Re: Finally...an AR that makes sense. [ QUOTE ] You know, just because a buck is legal by inches or points or whatever does not mean you have to shoot him. If a hunter does not know for sure if the buck is 12" wide or not, he can simply watch him walk and enjoy it. Just because you see a little mini 8-pt yearling in a 4-points-to-a-side area does not mean you have to shoot him. [/ QUOTE ] Sound advice right there folks. Whether by measurements or point numbers, antler restrictions will protect a lot of 'legal' bucks because hunters don't always get a good look. ThethirdI
Re: Finally...an AR that makes sense. I only have the option to hunt public land. If I dont' shoot the deer someone else will. I enjoy nature and hunting as much as the next guy, but after driving over an hour to get there and an hour to get back twice a week I need some sort of justification for my actions and some reward at the end of the tunnel. I could watch the "Nature" program on PBS if all I wanted to do was see animals. The deer would never make it to maturity in that area anyway. I had been letting deer walk for a total of three years by the time I shot the small eight point anyway. After 3 years of more deer sightings than I can count it was obvious that there weren't going to be any racks worth bragging about and I'm not an antler hunter anyway. I can't eat antlers. I would shoot a doe every year and never bat an eye if it would make a difference in the size of the bucks that would make it through a season. Not everyone has the same opportunities. This should be considered before laying out judgement.
Rhino
Re: Finally...an AR that makes sense. I can see where Ohio hunters are coming from but comparing Ohio & Mississippi is like comparing apples and oranges. From the data I've reviewed Ohio has an estimated deer population of 600,000 with about 400,000 deer hunters managing the resource. Here in Mississippi the estimated deer population is 1,750,000 with about 250,000 deer hunters. Obviously we have fewer hunters to manage a deer herd almost 3 times your size covering roughly the same amount of area as your state. ThethirdI
Re: Finally...an AR that makes sense. Rhino that makes more sense. Here in NorthWest Ohio there are limited places to hunt and you can only harvest one deer no matter what the sex. In southern Ohio the number of deer harvested can be three deer total with only one being a buck.
ThethirdI
Re: Finally...an AR that makes sense. Just to give you an example of how I know that someone else will shoot a deer on that public land. Last year during gun season (I don't hunt during gun it's too dangerous) there were 94 cars within a two mile stretch and that's when I stopped counting. There were plenty more there. I am amazed that any deer survive from year to year.

I know some public hunting areas around here get crowded but nothing like that.
ThethirdI
Re: Finally...an AR that makes sense. The first year I ever thought of gun hunting I wound up going out there. The hour long drive and when I got there I only stayed in the woods for about a half an hour. It looked like a pumpkin patch. Some of the hunters that came in after me set up about 50 yards right in front of me. They looked right at me and then just sat down. That's when I left. I didn't go gun hunting again until this year. It was the first time I have ever killed a deer with a gun. I don't think I'll ever do it again. I was happy with the deer, but personally didn't feel like I earned it. It seemed way to easy.
