NEIOWAARCHER
Re: .270 to big? Depends on. If your shooting for fur to sell, YEP. If your just thining the population. Nope.
wtnhunt
Re: .270 to big? Have killed a few with the .270 while deer hunting. Worked quite well on them, but I was not saving the hides.

[ QUOTE ] thats what im going to use this weekend for a coyote hunt and im going to mount it if its a nice yote [/ QUOTE ] most likely its not going to be a nice yote if you shoot it with a .270. all i use is my 22-250 unless im just out to shoot them. and even then it still blows big holes. here is an example of just a little 22-250 when it hits bone. just imagine what a .270 would do. you can get a pretty good idea of how big the hole in her chest was by all of the blood. the hole was about as big as or bigger than a softball. WaCoyote
Re: .270 to big? If you use "hard" bullets it should be fine. I wouldn't use core lokt or any factory soft point bullets. I wouldn't recommend "deer" type bullets. These are designed to open quickly on thin skinned game and dump mega energy on impact. These will not be fur friendly. Barnes bullets or the bonded types would be worth a look. Swift Scirroco or A-Frame, Nosler Accubond, Hornady Interbond, Trophy Bonded bear claw. These are a few. A lot of time when calling you'll have frontal shots. If you want to save the hide don't take these shots. You'll blow it wide open. Try for a broadside. Actually these big cartridges with the proper bullet can be less damaging than a 22 centerfire. I just bought a .223 and both the yotes I shot had giant splashes. The hides were ruined. I also have used my 22-250 a lot and have had very few probs unless I hit bone. I use to use my 30-06 and with a broaside shot the exit hole wasn't to big to fix. Anyways use hard heavy bullets. Elk type loads for best results. Do not gut shoot a yote with a .270!! Bullet placement is critical.
Guest MrBuckshot
Re: .270 to big? yeah probley a bullet that will mostley stay together and not expand would be pretty good, but probley i will get a mini 14 or and ak47, any opinions on those? WaCoyote
Re: .270 to big? Mini 14's and AK's are not accurate enough for serious coyote hunting. If you want a military type rifle go with an AR15. They do cost more but they are very accurate. Most AR makers guarantee 1" groups or better. Mine gives me 1/2 groups all day long. Guest MrBuckshot
Re: .270 to big? how much did that set you back? how accurate to say 100yards? is it still 1inch or what? i really dont know alot about shooting and im wonder maybe out of the 3(mini14,ak,or 798 22-250 remington) which is the most accurate so i feel good at the range and out in the woods. coles
Re: .270 to big? you can get into a savage or remington plain jane 22-250 for probably less than $400. and they should both be real good shooters. check em out. its worth it. an AR like the one above will probably set you back at least twice what the remmy or sav. would. WaCoyote
Re: .270 to big? My AR will basically hit a dime at 100 yds with no problem. When you have a rifle that shoots minute of angle (or 1" groups at 100 yds) you will get 2" at 200, 3" at 300 etc etc etc. This is important for yotes. They are not big targets. Mini 14's and Ak's will give you 2-3" groups at 100 yards. So you double that at 200 and triple it at three hundred. Great plinkers, good for close in work, but kiss the long stuff good bye. Coles is right, a bolt gun can be had for a third of the price of my AR. They are plenty accurate too. I paid about $500.00 for this: And it'll kill yotes all day long at long ranges. Very accurate and fun to shoot. Since you don't know about guns look at Ruger, Savage, Remmy, CZ, and some of the other gun Manufacturers websites and see what they offer. I'd recommend a .223, 22-250, .204, 0r 220 swift. I don't know what your finances are but there are a ton of AR makers out there. You'll pay $850.00 and up. Mine is a custome rig and I paid Just under $1300.00 without the scope. Bushy has a couple of nice ones designed for varminters/coyote hunters for about $1000.00. Everybody seems to love there bushy's.

ousoonerfan22
Re: .270 to big? I shot a coyote last fall while sitting in my deer stand and I was surprised the .270 150 gr partition left such a small exit hole,I shot him broadside through the ribs at around 150-175 yards. And if you ever want to make those 300+ yard shots you can. It's also a great P-dog gun if you ever get the urge for that. Congrats on your choice.
