cshofner
I am planning an elk hunt to Colorado during the blackpowder season this fall. I shoot a Winchester Apex .50 cal. 150 grains of Pyrodex pellets and 295 grain Powerbelt. This load works great on deer but I will have to switch to loose powder for Colorado. Does anyone have any good load recomendations for shooting loose powder? Thanks.
WABS
Re: muzzleloading for elk May want to see how your gun handles the 348 gr PB bullet. I found that my T/C blackdiamond handled both quite well. When I went out to Idaho to hunt elk/deer I was prepared to shoot either. I was sighted in 2 inches high at 100 with my 295 gr and right on with my 348 gr. Just a thought.
cshofner
Re: muzzleloading for elk Thanks for the input. Were you using the Aerotip or hollow point? Do you use loose powder? I have never used loose so I am looking for recomendations on what type of powder and how much.
WABS
Re: muzzleloading for elk I use the hollow point and it performed very well on the large muley buck I shot while out there. I used a 295 gr on him. Never got the chance to see how they worked on elk -- tag didn't taste too good either ;-) About 6 years ago Bluelk (previous Moderator) convinced me to use loose powder over pellets and so I've been using Pyrodex RS Select ever since. I've got about a 1/2 dozen quick loaders that I put my premeasured loads in, and it works just fine. Just be very consistent in measuring out your loads. Tecumseh
Re: muzzleloading for elk I know a couple of guys who have shot Elk with 295 gr powerbelt and worked fine.As far as powder pyrodex select or 777 will work fine.
