Buck Beds?

At the Illinois Deer Classic last weekend, i picked up a brochure for a guy who comes to your land and helps your deer numbers increase. Im not willing to dish out hundreds of dollars for something i dont really believe, but part of his gimmick was producing buck beds and doe beds. He mentioned 7 elements necessary for a buck bedding area. I was wondering if any of you knew how to do this, i am interested in making some of these areas on my uncles 210 acres in north west illinois. Thanks a lot.

Re: Buck Beds?

Produce a willow thicket or pine thicket where there is good available food sources and water nearby. Both willows and pines will grow pretty rapidly and what is left underneath usually is a nice thick area of cover for deer or any other wildlife for that matter.

Had a great bedding area here in a willow thicket, that had waist high swamp grass. That now is unfortunately underwater year round due to some work that was done with the ditch at the property lines. Planning to try to fix my water drainage problems this summer. Biggest deer I have ever seen used to bed down there.

Re: Buck Beds?

You want something that will create great buck bedding areas? Get yourself some multi-flora rose. In no time at all you will have an inpenetratable bedding area that will have you wondering what the heck you ever did that for. That is the nastiest stuff on earth and is guaranteed to keep the area totally undisturbed by hunters.....even you.

Ok.....give me my hundreds of dollars now.

The rose works great on edges to keep tresspassers out as well. Now send me the dollars.

Sam16: if you are referring to Tony LaPratt, I have seen him speak and he is a very interesting guy. Many people (especially in his home state of Michigan) speak highly of him. I have not met him personally so can't offer much input. The details of his buck bed secrets are sworn to secrecy.
