TEAM #7: Run n Gun

Well...we went at it again and all I can say is...NICE TOM DOWN! biggrin.gif

Joe was working 2 toms that were closing the distance in front of us. We were in the same spot that Joe took that huge bird last year. They were gobbling their heads off and coming in fast. Joe says" Dad, if they come in on the left I got 'em, If they come in on the right, you got 'em...OK?" Deal. They sounded like they were about 75 yards away and closing when we hear this mature Tom let loose BEHIND US! He was like maybe 20 yards or so behind us up over a ridge. We look at each other, eyes bulging! We had no idea this bird was anywhere near us. I roll over on my belly and get ready, the bird reaches the crest of the hill on the path I am sitting next to. He is at full strut! He sees our hen and jake deke and he locked on. He had to break strut to get around a down tree limb on the path. When he did, he turned his back to me and went behind the tree. That gave me time to swing my gun over to a more clear shooting path. I was using my Mossberg 835, the one I just bought about 3 months ago. I has a 28" bbl. Way too long for a turkey gun, but since Joe took my other turkey gun, I have this one. I was worried I was gonna trip that Tom as he was walking down that path with that 1/2 mile long bbl. Joe putted a bit...the bird raised his head...BAM! at about 5"...YUP...5'! I was lucky to hit that bird at all being soo close to it. That shot did not even get a chance to spread, maybe a golfball sized pattern to work with at that range. Down the bird went.

Joe has turned into quite the turkey caller and he is getting better evey year.

Bird weighed 20 lbs, sporta a 8 3/4" beard and has 3/4" spurs.

Well.. weather this weekend is gonna be real crappy. Supposed to thunderstorm starting tomorrow thru monday. Hunting this weekend will probably be terrible but I'll probably be out there regardless.. I kinda have an idea of their travel pattern so I just might set up somewhere along there and call every now and then. Just ambush em, like deer hunting.

Still have memorial day weekend to hunt, but my dad's friend is getting married on that saturday so that kinda screwed up 4 days of hunting for us.

But if the season were to end today, I wouldn't call it a total bust. I passed a shot on opening day because I felt it was too far and then this past weekend, I was able to call a bird in for my dad.

Well guess all our seasons are done...I finally just entered my bird a few minutes ago..been busy working and hunting. Was going to go out this morning but didn't make it out. I'd say though I had an awesome season...after 3-4 years without a bird, finally got one and I heard more gobbling then past few years. I think there is going to be a decent brood of birds this year.

Anyway, Good job team!!

Yup, that is where joint staff training is next week...at Pack Forest. We basically go through what to be teaching in lessons, van safety driving, fire extinguisher training, a whole bunch of stuff. Of course it seems that in the evenings half the staff go out to the local bar. NO THANKYOU! So good thing I ordered a few good books, lol.
