Not sure about this year. Keep in touch and maybe next year we can do a swap. My weekends are pretty booked up now for May. Finally starting to see some green here in NWPA! That's a good thing -- Almost turkey time !

Re: TURKEY TEAM #14

Well guys opening weekend in Texass was a little slow. I only got to hunt Saturday due to some chores I needed to do around the house Sunday. I did manage to call up a hen first thing Saturday morning. She came running in right after fly down. But I didn't even hear a gobble on that piece of land. After playing with her for nearly on hour, she kept leaving and coming back, I decided to try a different place about a mile away. Before I could get everything unloaded at the next spot, I heard two birds gobbling about three hundreds yard from the truck. I got pretty excited and snuck to within 150 yards of the birds. I set up right between a wheat field and a CRP field. It was a perfect strut zone right on the top of a small ridge. I called up another lone hen from the opposite direction of the toms. She must have been at her nest because she came up silently and headed right back after a minute or two. The toms answered every call for about an hour, but after that they shut down only gobbling every 15-20 minutes. We decided to give them the rest of the day off. We drove by the open draw they where in and sure enough, they were wer strutting with about five hens. They will get lonely in a few days and hopefully I will be there gun in hand.

  • 2 weeks later...

Well opening day was a bust here. This weather is unbelievable. It was cold and rainy yesterday and we never even heard a tom. Was thinking about a short hunt in the morning but right now it is snowing like crazy and the wind is about to knock out the power. Hope I get this posted LOL. Anyways it'll get better soon I hope!

Well I did kill a Jake Saturday the 7th. However, I was only able to take two pictures of him. He was 12 lb's and had a 4.5 inch beard. I'll have to talk to the mod to see if I can enter him. We had to put my grandfather in the hospital that same day. He has been in the ICU since. I will let you guys know when I hear if he qualifies or not. I'll post pics once i get them on my computer.

this weekend...

I'm planning on taking my uncle's 15 yr. old step-son out this weekend for our youth season...possibly a couple other kids too. I've got a pile of birds scouted out...hopefully, we'll score on a nice longbeard or two. They won't count for the contest but it would sure be a great start to the season. One things for sure, there's gonna be a ton of hens to deal with.
