i'm going back when i get off at 3. Do i go and try to strike the bird back up or do i leave him til sat. and try another section of the property that hasnt been hunted yet??

[/ QUOTE ]

Birds that haven't been hunted or 2 that were worked some Tuesday afternoon. That would be a coin toss to me but I'd learn toward going to some birds that haven't heard a call yet. That is assuming you know there are some over there.

I'm packing to head back to camp this afternoon and go for them tomorrow and Saturday, provided the rain holds out. Looks like there's a cahnce it will rain Saturday evening and Sunday. If it still looks that way come Saturday afternoon, I'll come home and check in then. If the forecast changes for the better I'll stay in the turkey woods.

Re: TEAM #21: Full Fan Fanatics

The birds here on sunday didnt want to play. We heard very little gobbling at first light. Had about 60-70 birds go out in the cornfeild to feed but only 3 longbeards walk by within 50yrds. All they did was look at the decoys and kept walking.

Went out on monday after work. Didn't hear or see anything. It has Been raining since. Looks like it might clear up for sunday.

Well my 2nd gobbler of the year is in the bag. smile.gif

Posted the story in the turkey room. I'm pretty sure this one was a 2 year old even though he had one spur a little over an inch. This one has a 9 1/4" beard and 1" & 1 1/16" spurs.

This morning was sort of a bust. Overcast and way too windy. Heard 4 birds but the 2 that were on our property only gobbled once each. Counldn't coax that loud mouth bird on the neighbor's property across the creek to our side. Wouldn't you just know it...the vocal bird is on the wrong side of the creek. smirk.gif

Started raining at midday so I hot footed it home. Looks like the weather will be much better from mid week through Saturday so I'll get someone to twist my arm to go huntin then. grin.gif

I'm taking a youth hunter with me from Saturday through Monday. He's out of school next week so his dad is coming up from south LA so we can go try to trick some more turkeys.

Re: TEAM #21: Full Fan Fanatics

nice job rhino!

birds here are still with hens. the boy were raising the roof sat morning. we set up WAYYY too close to a gobbling birds sat morning and couldnt get the rest to even answer the calls. saw 3 reallt big strutters out in a road and tried coaxing them in but the hens led them away. went to a field close by and there they were 3 long beards some jakes and about 5 hens. we tried calling them over and the hens would led them the opposite way.

we know now where they're going now we should get atleast one. hopefully in a week or so they'll loose the hens and come to a call.

Re: TEAM #21: Full Fan Fanatics

Congrats Rhino!

Got out fri night had 6 jakes 10yrds in front of the DB blind but let them walk. On Sat morn went out for a couple hrs in the rain. The birds gobbled on the limb but when they hit the ground they went quite.

Sunday by sunrise it was done with the rain. I had one gobbler going crazy on the limb. He came gobblin all the way in to about 30yrds. I would have shot but the wind was blowing to hard to shot that far with a bow. He never went farther than 200yrds and only came back to about 50yrds for 3 1/2hrs. And he gobbled the hole time before he left.

Re: TEAM #21: Full Fan Fanatics

They have been henned up pretty bad around here to sportsman. Very few birds have been gobbling after they leave the roost. I did hear a bird crank up gobbling on his own at 10:10 while I was fishing this past Friday. It's 1 gobbler/day here and since I killed one that morning I just listened to him sound off while I was bass fishing.

Probably a good thing you didn't try that 30 yard shot in a high wind boomer. Last year my buddy in Iowa took that same shot in a high wind with his video camera running. The wind blew his arrow enough to the side that he winged the bird but didn't kill it. He pulled a still shot pic from the video and emailed the pic to me of his arrow in flight on the way to the bird. The wind probably had the fletching end of his arrow turned about 20 degrees to the right. No telling how far downwind the arrow blew with the wind but sure was enough not to kill the bird.

Heading back to camp tomorrow to chase birds Thursday and Friday before my youth hunter shows up Friday evening. Finally have some cool weather moving in. Good luck to ya'll this weekend. wink.gif

The birds are still falling for me here. I took a good friend of mine's 12 year old son turkey hunting with me. Fortunately he planned to hunt with me for 3 days because that's what it took to get his bird. A true limb hanger too. I posted the turkey tale and some pics in the Turkey Forum. wink.gif

Heading to Texas Thursday for fun chasing Rios. grin.gif

Sounds like you're having a good season Rhino. Things here have been cold, wet and windy. Temps at night have been in the teens maybe getting to 40 the last 3-4 days. Sounds like its going to warmup by next week but with a chance of snow this weekend.

Good luck in Texas rhino. I hope to make it back down there someday again.

Re: TEAM #21: Full Fan Fanatics

Thanks boomer. Hope it warms up in your neck of the woods soon.

It was unusually cold for MS lately and a bit windy too. Looks like it will be back to normal temps by the time I get back from Texas.

The bad news I found out this morning was they are forecasting a high of 96 for our 1st day turkey hunting in Texas. tongue.gif I guess I'll need a sweat towel. smirk.gif The 2nd day the forecasted high will be 77. Also due to last year's drought we're limited to 2 gobblers this year. It's usually a 4 bird hunt.

Re: TEAM #21: Full Fan Fanatics

It's been cold the last 3 or 4 days here. i didnt hunt this past weeknd due to high winds and the cold. figured i would catch up on some much needed sleep since my days start at a early 3am.

It's wartming up today and suppose to be raining sat.(70%). I hope to get out and get after em again. I just joined a big hunting club of about 1200 1400 acres. only a couple people hunt turkeys. mainly a deer club. so me and my buddy are planning on going there this weekend. it has loads of turkeys and deer from what i hear and big ones too!! also has some beaver swamps to bust up some ducks!

Good luck to you rhino this weekend in Texas. Boomer hope your weather will change for the good. to everyone else. hope your season will be a good and safe one.

well sat i went to my new piece of land that i just recently joined this past week and boy was it an awesome morning! me and 2 guys hunted together and prolly hear close to 200 gobbles. one of the birds alone gobbled 131 times on the limb. it is some beautiful land with some bug swamps on it. one the guys with us killed a bird with a 7 1/2 in beard and 1 in spurs and wieghed little over 20 pounds. we hope he's the one that gobbled so much. me and one of my buddies tried for a another bird while jeff was hunting the bird he killed but wee came up empty.

needless to say i'll be going back down there til the seasons out here in about 4 weeks. soo wish me luck on my first longbeard!!

Had an awesome weekend this weekend. On thursday we had one come strutting in and just hung at 50 yards, would not come any closer. It cut to the creek and was at 26 yards but all you could see was the very top of his head, I had no shot. Yesterday afternoon we set up under where they roost. We watched 7 toms/jakes fighting in the pasture 1/2 a mile away all afternoon. FINALLY, at about a quarter to eight they started to make there way to the creek and then towards us. The two biggest in bunch popped the hill and were POed! They were coming in full strut right to out strutting jake and two hen decoys, we were set up in the Double BUll. This was going to be perfect. My dad was on the rangefinder counting down teh yards 60,50,40 and finally 35, 30! Right when they hit 30 I drew back, they stopped. I thought they were going to keep coming right to the decoy so I swung to the left window of the blind. They weren't there, so I swung back and they were still standing at thirty. I put my 30 pin in the center of the strutter and let er fly........I took all the feathers right off of its back. I thought I hit it so I was yelling at my dad to shoot the other one. He dropped it like a rock. I ran out of the blind after the other one and he was casually walking away. So i grabbed my arrow and looked at it. No blood, but a ton of feathers laying on the ground, and not from my dad's bird either. So close. Anyway, i looked over and here comes the group of jakes peeking around the corner. I told dad to drop the bird and get back in the blind. So now we had a dead tom in the middle of the decoys. LOL Anyways with a little coaxing the came in to 30 yards also. I drew, release and cleaning the feathers off of this birds back AGAIN! I was mad! But it happens to everyone. Oh well, that was my first ever shot at a turkey gun or bow, so I was pretty excited. And my first kill I got to see. We ended up sitting there this morning and had three toms fly off the roost and strut and gobble their heads off at 40 yards, but they wouldnt budge any closer.

I still have all of next week though!

Sorry to hear you missed a little high IowaDeerHunter but it sure sounds like you had an exciting hunt. You'll get him next time.

I posted a story about the bird I killed Thursday morning in the turkey hunting room. A true classic hunt unfolded getting him. One I'll remember forever. This bird limited me out here in MS with 3 birds in the bag so you can stick a fork in me, I'm done. :D My last Eastern bird ended up being my biggest of the season with an 11" paint brush and 1 1/4" spurs.

I'll keep checking in on ya'll and keep up with turkey tales in the turkey room too.

Good luck guys and keep after them. I ain't heard no fat lady yet for this contest. ;)

Well guys I have been thinking about how i missed in the exact same spot on two birds this weekend. I was cleaning my bow tonight (so dusty from sitting in the field) and was looking at my pins, and noticed that my 40 yard pin is orange, the pin I aimed with was the orange one not the red 30. LOL, Sad I know, but at least I know how I missed now, I blew that one majorily!!!! Revenge is sweet though!!!!! :)

Well I left the house at 3am got to my spot by 5am. I set up about 150yrds from their roost. After flydown I had 2 big longbeards, 1 jake and 1 hen come in to about 70yrds. But the hen change her mind and went off to my right. The toms and jake went with her. When the got about 100yrds away 1 tom got lucky. I got another tom to gobble a couple hrs later. He started to come then all went dead. After a couple minutes a yote was standing about 55yrds in front of me. The old smokepole sent a nice load at him. He fell half way down the ridge and crawled off. I tracked him for about 1/2 mile in the bluffs. I think he had to lose most of his blood, but never found him.

Got more birds gobblin a little later. Had a b-mobile out with 2 hen decoys. A real nice tom and a jake come in. The jake made it to about 40yrds but the tom stayed back about 60yrds. They ended up feeding off. About an hour later had 3 jakes come in to about 15yrds.

I think this is a year of the jakes for me.

OK sportsman...glad you scored before you hung your calls up for the season.

Don't forget to post your required pics and submission form in the entry thread sportsman.

Good luck on the fishing trip and congrats on the upcoming wedding. Life will certainly never be the same for you after the 12th. :D

BTW, boomer and IowaDeerHunter have been around. Not sure what's happened to IowaDeerHunter since he missed that last bird using the wrong pin. Sounds like boomer's been covered up in jakes lately.
