well didn't get one today

Today was opening day and I saw plenty of really good birds, but they were henned up and would only gobble at my calls and follow the hens the other way. I am going to give it a week or two and then try again the season lasts untill May 27th so I have plenty of other chances to get one big tom.

Hey guys just checking in hope all of you going out this weekend get a big one, I found out that these birds here in colorado are a lot smarter than the birds I have hunted all my life in oklahoma. They just won't cooperate and come into the calls so I am going to get a B-Moble and try to just sit up on a clearing and wait. maybe it will work and I'll get one soon.

welp, good luck to everyone and hope you get your big one.

Chalk one up for the team!

Sorry I haven't been on here in a while, lots of stuff going on. Well, Thursday was the second day of our season and I got my best bird so far. Opening morning was a no go due to a severe storm and the fact I had to be at a work meeting at 8:00. I went out that afternoon, called in a hen, saw a tom and got within 75 yards but he wouldn't commit. At sundown, had 5 hens fly up to roost. So Thursday morning I had a 7:00 meeting, so that wasn't an option again.....Went out after the meeting at about 2:00..tornado watch, some spots of threatening weather..no biggie. I only heard a total of 5 gobbles that afternoon, but I did have to temporarily retreat from the woods twice due to threatening weather. Finally...all settled down and it quit raining, the sun broke out, but still nothing gobbling. I made my way to the freshly mowed gas line and set up there when I saw a group of 6 birds with a big tom and another one. I knew they were going to the Hilton to roost (that's what I named a certain group of pines) so I went there and set-up. Finally they came out of the tall CRP where I could see them. Took them about 45 min to close the gap towards the pines. Did'nt have to call once except to get him to stretch that long ol' neck out a lillte more!! It was sweet, he was spittin/drummin and strutting all the way!! One shot from the ol' Mossberg with Winchester Supremes rolled him up! Ok, now for the stats....

weight:27lb 2oz

beard: 11 1/4" (but there is one hair that nearly reaches 12"0

spurs: 1 1/8" (26mm)

My wife has to download and burn a disk for me then I'll gat some pics posted...

Good luck to everyone!!

Went out Saturday, saw one tom being shot about 200 yards from me. Never knew the hunter was even there. The gobbler and 10 hens or so flew down and gobbled once off of the roost and that was it. He went about following one of two travel paths to a strutting and feeding zone .... and I picked the wrong one to be on... so the hunter I didn't know about shot him. Some buddies of mine are having luck, and a few relatives too so maybe in the next few weeks I'll have some luck.

Got one

Okay I will keep it short and to the point. I slept in this morning due to the hunting being tough here in PA. I left the house @ 7 and had this dude on the ground @ 0835. I hunted where I killed the monster with 1 1/2 hooks last year. Found me a nice big red oak to set against and did some light calling. On my 3 series of yelps, he gobbled. Then he came in 190 deg from where he first gobbled. 38 yds and down he went.

24 1/2 lbs

10 3/8 beard

1" spurs.

hey man that is a great bird, congrats. I am 0 for 4 I have been hunting four times and four times I have called up a bird but each time they hang up about 80yds away. I am to the point that I will take any tom that gets in range. I have learned on thing The Colorado Dept. of wildlife says that turkeys dont live above 8000 feet in the mountains, the area that I am hunting is right below Pikes Peak and is at 10,000 ft. which makes it real hard to run and gun. Sorry this got so long but I had to vent my frustrations on not having bagged a bird yet. Great birds guys and good luck to everyone else.

Congrats on the bird, sorry everyone I didn't get a bird this year our season was looking good for a little bit but then It went down hill from there. First day I had three gobblers coming to me about 100 yds away and something kept them from coming any closer and I went out almost everyday in the three weeks we had and they were hung up w/the hens until the last week and then it seems like they just shut up. All I can say is I tried real hard for our team sorry guys!!!! HAPPY HUNTING AND BE SAFE OUT THERE.

well, u can chalk another one up for the team!!! i had been hunting this bird the past week and he always seemed to give me the slip, until monday morning at about 6:25. He was gobblin on the roost and had hens all around him and, since he hadnt been answering too many of my calls earlier in the week, i figured i would just sit and wait for those hens to bring him to me. sure enough, i watched him fly down and land about 60 yds away and he strutted for about 5 minutes and the hens started comin my way. one of them even walked about 5 yds from me. the gobbler followed shortly after and was dead at 30 steps. it was kind of disappointing walkin up to him because we had a tough winter hear and he had some severe beard rot. 2 beards that added up to 4 inches, but he was a mature 2 year old bird. weighed 18.1 pounds with 7/8 in. spurs.

Congrats on your bird RDNKHNTR

They are being very difficult around here. They gobble on the roost, but only to crow calls or rooster crows, etc. Once they fly down they go about their business and completely shut up (about 6:25am)... I still have this coming weekend so maybe just maybe I'll luck out.

well guys, Saturday is the last day that I will have a chance to get a bird. I got real close last weekend, but could not get a clear shot. In the morning I will shoot anything with a hint of a beard, I am not going to be picky. Good luck to all of you still hunting and wish me luck.

Well the last day of the season came and I had been outdone every weekend for the last month and a half. At 5:00pm I got off work on sunday and headed up the mountain to where I hunt. When I got out there a heavy thunderstorm had just blown over and everything was perfect there were deer and elk everywhere so I thought the birds ought to be gobbling. To get to the area that I had been seeing the birds come off of the roost I had to hike over two mountains wich equaled about a mile and a half in some very rough country. When I got into the area where I have been seeing the birds wich is about halfway up the third mountainI set up above the roost area and start calling and heard an immediate response about a mile away down the valley. Normally at this point I have been moving toward the turkeys that I could here and they would go the other way, so this time I just stayed there and waited and the turkey quit gobbling. About forty-five minutes later I heard a bird on top of the mountain let loose a gobble that sounded like it was about 200yds away so I repositioned to where I was looking up hill and let out a few yelps with my mouth call and the bird cut me off. It only took about three minutes from the first gobble till the bird was in range and to my suprise there was three birds coming toward me and the first one had a decent beard and the other two were jakes. When they got to 40yds the two jakes started putting and stoped so I thought now or never, BOOM!!! and ther lay my first merriams and only bird of the 2007 season.

For some reason my pics won't download so I will e-mail them to strut.
