Good Looking Bird mo_hunter!! Congrats to her!

Well team so far the birds have not cooperated. I just got back from todays hunt and it was near light out before them birds started gobbling. They refuse to say anything until they get ready to fly down. We had some hens a talking earlier but those gobblers only responded a couple times and went on their own. And after that not a gobble to be heard. Darn Ohio Birds! Hopefully the weather will change and we'll get some sunshine and hopefully that'll get them talking more.

My first time getting out was Saturday the 28th. My good buddy from high school and I met up with another friend and went to a summer wheat field. We got in there and we had gobblers all around us gobbling their heads off on the roost. My two friends and I were all calling back and forth trying to sound like a bunch of hens. We had 4 hen decoys out and two jakes. We sat there and heard the long beards fly down, but they soon changed direction and shut their mouths up and never made any more gobbles.

Now this is where the story gets fun. So read!!! Most exciting hunt I ever been on.

Gil (my best friend) and I went to a piece of state ground, its a pretty hidden secret, because its between two privatly owned fields. This place is a valley, with two big ridges leading to the fields. We got down there and stopped for a rest, because we walked for a good mile and two. We stopped and he got out his mouth call and I got out my slate call. He started clucking and I made some purrs, we heard a gobble about 100 yrds or so away from us. We started to walk down the ridge and got into a creek bottom. This was real thick in the valley. We got down there and set up because they sounded like jake was gobblin to us. After a while nothing showed up. So we got up and started to move very low and slow down throw the creek. We were getting wet from the creek cause we were crawling through there. We got closer and could see a tom's big struttin fan. We got into positioned but we found out the bird was real young, he was by himself. We started to call to him away, but he never gobbled. After a couple purrs from my slate call we found out why the young gobbler wasn't gobbling to us. A loud long gobble came out of two big boss gobblers. These birds were old because they had a low groan in their gobbles. When they gobbled to us, all the other Tom's in the woods let loose. We couldn't see the two boss toms, but they were probably about 100 yrds away from us. We counted 9 gobbles in one series of gobbles. We looked up on the ridge and saw 12 hens walking up the ridge. We were trying to itimidate the hens and make them come to us, but they were headed to their nests. After about 10 minutes of no gobbling we decided to go after the two big boss toms, which were with all the 12 hens. We got going up the hill and we heard two birds fighting, we both dropped like marine snipers. We then belly crawled 200 some yrds up this rocky hillside. It sucked, but exciting as heck. We got up to where we heard the birds fighting and I stood up slowly and then dropped right back down. I said to my buddy which was only 30 feet away from me that I seen two hens and the two boss gobblers. He slowly raised up to see where they were but never saw them. I switched camos this year to Realtree AP and my buddy could not see me in the thick brias at only 30 feet away. This camo rocks. He told me there wasn't any birds up there and we argued a little as we both stood up and then suddenly he dropped real quick and said long beard, I was mad because I dropped first and told him about the birds. The birds never saw us, and my friend had a good 40 yrd shot on them, but never took the shot. The birds moved on and that was the end of our hunt. It was wierd all day they were gobbling their heads off during this long hunt, but they all stopped.

We went hardcore on these Toms, even though we came out empty handed.

My hunts have been about the same as any other day, nothing at all, and hardly any gobbling. Them birds are bound to slip up soon...I hope!

Opening Day

Well yesterday was opening day of the NY season. I went out for a couple hours before work but I did not hear or see a single turkey. All I saw was a young buck and a red fox.

I will be out of town this weekend so I am planning on going out again tomorrow morning. Hopefully things will change and I will at least see a bird.

i got one today. 18 lbs, 1 1/16 spurs and 10 3/4 beard. will post pics today.

Whoohoo, Congrats!! Can't wait to get the pics!!

These Ohio birds sure ain't cooperating very well are they for me,

I was so close this morning! Here's how it went.

We got in there and planned to set up down in a small bottom, well we saw a hen in the tree in front of us so we backed up slightly and set up. Meanwhile that gobbler is just a shouting off. So my Dad starts calling and he answers. This is a typical morning!! Finally we got one that will work some. Then a loud motorcycle or something went down the road and he flew off right roost about then and let loose a gobble much closer...Then I see him coming through the bottom. Wouldn't you know it right where we wanted to be? All he had to do was keep coming straight for us and we'd have him. I took the safety off... But he decided to cut to the right and start strutting not 30yards, but blocking my shot was a wall of saplings, otherwise...Dead Bird Walking! My dad was a playing that call trying to get him over more, but to no avail. One call the gobbler wasn't ready for was one my dad does naturally. It's a little "click" sound, kinda like the spit sound they make while strutting. He perked his head up, looking... and starts taking steps closer.... Until he then goes into strut again and back and forth he goes. We worked and worked him, but he refused to come anymore.

He then lost interest and walked off into a field and we tried to get on him there but he wasn't as interested. Had to call it a day then. And here I am to tell the tale!

He was a very small looking bodied bird for some odd reason, too.

So my father & I went out this morning. When I arrived at his house he said he had a plan based on where him & the neighbor saw 10 turkey last night. He was going to send me to a new location on the edge of a cut corn field and he was going to head to my usual spot since that was in a little better location than his. Well I no sooner sat down when I heard him shoot. I was a little disappointed that I was not in my usual morning spot but still glad one of us got one. Hopefully I will have better luck this weekend.

Congrads to your Dad ny_gun!

THings have been going better for me, but still haven;t been able to seal the deal. Had some Jakes come in to 5 yards the one day, but there was a Big Bird Gobbling just out of sight, and he was coming, waited and he turned and started going to the right and the Jakes followed.

Then we hit another spot and my friend called up a big old Tom, but he was spooky and came in to about 35 yards and started Putting and turned and stared walking off, I let him have it, but I missed him. Very disappointing to say the least. 3 Days left to fill my tags.

Anyone else doing good?

Well the NY Turkey Season is over for me. The official end to the season is Thursday however I will be traveling for the rest of the week for work and will not be able to hunt. I am sorry to say that I will not be contributing to the team score this year. Good luck to anyone whose season is still open.

Well guys, I have good news and bad. The good news is that after 3 years of bowhunting the thunder chicken I finally pinwheeled my first with the ol' Hoyt. 20 Pounds 9" beard and 1" spurs.

The bad news........none of my pictures came out!!!!!! The only pic I have is one that was taken by my son with his digital.

It was a great year, as I managed to kill a second with the bow but that won't help the team.

I'm really sorry to let y'all down.
