Re: How High?

We make alot of homemade lock ons that my g-pa welds together and we put them up about 15-18 ft. I can hunt out of them no problem now that i kinda got over my fear of heights. But with my climber when i first started usin it i was scared of it eventho i had my safety harness i only went up between 10 and 12 ft. i killed a few deer but i also got seen quite a bit. now that im used to my climber i go up at least 20 ft. if the tree will let me but no lower than 15 ft.

Re: How High?

I usually lock my stands on around 20-25 feet and will get my climber up around 30' if the tree will allow. Yes you can kill deer from much lower, but why put yourself in the line of sight of deer. I can get away with so much more movement at that height. The idea behind a tree stand is to get you up out of the line of sight of a deer so if you aren't afraid of heights might as well get up where you know that you are out of it. The only thing about being up that high is you need to practice often and be sure of your shot placement. If you get to high it becomes much easier to get a single lung hit which a deer can run a long way on. Just my 2 cents.

Re: How High?

I started off with all mines around 16' to 18' due to the use of a stick ladder height I used during set up.

I would simply place the stand at the top of the ladder and put screw in step in reverse order to the ladder steps and then remove the ladder.

Did it this way for years.

In the past 2 years I have moved a few up to 30' and noticed and vast improvement in stealth and the ability to move more while trying to get in shape for a shot.

BUT...

It all depends on the tree and available cover or structure around me to break up my outline.

Some stands or only 15'...

Re: How High?

15-20 feet. if i couldn't get up higher than 12 feet, i'd rather sit on the ground, because if you're below 12 feet, you're right in the deer's general view.
