What should I plant in this spot (pic)

Recommended Posts

I got this small spot that I have cleared out in the woods and Im not sure what to plant. It gets about 4-6 hours of sunlight atleast. Right now its in Monster Mix and it will come up next spring but the deer dont visit it as much as I would like. I was thinking of maybe planting some corn or oaks but im not fully sure, What do you guys think:

Also, Do you guys think I should leave that little tree in there (the one in the middle of the plot)?, the only reason I left it was in hopes of a buck rubbing on it or making a scrape by it and using it as a licking branch.

looks to me what you planted is doing well--don't know if I'd change a thing. If you are wanting to plant something very attractive for fall/winter hunting I would stick to the cereal grains such as wheat or rye.

I don't think it gets enough sunlight or big enough for corn. Better off putting a corn feeder there if you want corn.

cant use a feeder, its illegal in WI. I think that I might plant it into Brassica, the deer seem to like it a lot in my area. Any other input is still wanted.

That is a really small plot for brassicas Shane. My winter mix with brassicas did not do so well in the shady area as the other plot did where it got more sunlight. Might think twice on that. Think what you have planted in that pic is what you should stick with.

Shane, I wouldn't plant brassica either. Brassica has a very narrow window as an attractant. Some times as narrow as 4-5 days during open season. Sometimes even less. I plant it only as an after season food source.

Your space is too limited to concentrate your planting like this.

I would rather see you plant a blend like the "Forrested Trail " from Heartland Wildlife Institute or some other mix designed for low sunlight conditions. " Secret Spot " from Whitetail Institute might be another option.

PS

Leave that tree!

Shane, you might want to pm Martin(OneidaMan). Think a rye or rye and clover mix would do really well there. Martin has some new stuff, high sugar content, that I have been doing some reading on that should really draw the deer and turkeys. Will be planting some of it here this year.
