Guest mastinson
My old 20 year old MTD rider was about worn out and yesterday I purchased a new John Deere LA100 riding mower with a 18.5 hp Briggs and Stratton engine. The John Deere owners manual says use 10w-30 but Briggs and Stratton website says I can uses SAE-30 . I have always used SAE30 in all my Briggs and Stratton engines, do you think I should do what John Deere says or go with what the engine manufacture says I can use. Btw Briggs and Stratton says that if a multi viscosity oil such as 10w-30 is used in tempatures above 80 degrees that oil cosumption can ocurr, so why does John Deere reccomemd 10w-30 if this is true? Shaun_300
Re: any mower or small engine experts around I wouldn't think it'd matter what you use, as long as it's meant for 4 strokes. I usually run 10w-30 in all my small engines and have never had a problem. And I don't think it'll make a difference with temperature as for burning oil. I'd say it'll use just as much whether it's 50 or 80 degrees. It's normal for them to burn a small amount of oil between oil changes. Just like a car. Guest mastinson
Re: any mower or small engine experts around So regular 10w-30 penzoil like I run in my truck would be a good choice?

Strut10
Re: any mower or small engine experts around Multi-viscosity oils break down more readily than a single weight oil. If you do not plan to run the engine in extremely cold temperatures, I'd go with an SAE 30 weight oil.
Adjam5
Re: any mower or small engine experts around I agee single weight oil is the way to go. It is much more of a heavier duty oil.

Bob LeBlanc
Re: any mower or small engine experts around As it's new...Is the engine warrantied by Deere or Briggs? If it's Deere...use their recommended oil...at least until the warranty period is over. Bob
Guest mastinson
Re: any mower or small engine experts around I contacted Briggs and Stratton on the phone and they said that John Deere builds the mower and they build the engine, they also agreed me that SAE 30 is the best thing to use in temps above 40 degrees and when I ask if Penzoil SAE 30 like I have always used is ok the tech guy said that is what he used also. I checked the oil today and it is says add, I think it is sitting level and wonder if the John Deere dealer might of not added enough, I am going to fill it up to full and hope that the dipstick is not wrong because I hate to blow the seals.
