Fishing after ice melts away

Hey everyone.. I was just wondering.. since the ice should be going away within the next month or so around here, I was wondering what lures/tactics you guys use when the ice goes away? I know that undoubtedly, the water level will be very high after the ice melts, but what are good tactics for fishing from the shore around this time of the year?

Re: Fishing after ice melts away

It all depends what you're fishing Joe, normally we fish for pike when the ice goes off. Well when the season opens. We usually lose the ice in mid to late April here, the season opens for pike and walleye the second or third saturday in May, depending where you're fishing. For spring running pike, we use 6-8" sucker minnows in a creek with a bobber the size of a baseball. Cast it out and leave the bail open and let the minnow swim. You sure know it when the pike nail it, the bobber will start making a wake then BAM! Gone. grin.gif That's what we have best success on up here. wink.gif

Re: Fishing after ice melts away

if your going for bass....u cant beat just a dark green pumpkin seed senko worm

hook it weedless with an offset worm hook, dont add any weights, use light, sensitive line around 6 or 8 lbs.

fish it by just casting it out letting it sink down to the bottom, give it a little jerk, let it sink to the bottom again

just keep this pattern going but in the early season u really gotta be slow on the retrieve, i usually count to thousand- five once it hits the bottom then give it a soft little jerk. this gives the senko an incredible motion, looks just like a dying fish. ive caught more bass doing this than anything else, even during the summer and fall

man i cant wait till the ice is gone around here! the only open holes in the resevoir here are so filled up with migrating ducks and geese that i think the fish wouldnt even be holding there LOL
