popgun
Re: I\'m confused... Here are the facts: The Arkansas River is supposed to be pronounced like Are Kansas. But the state is pronounced as Arkansaw because it was named by the ancient Native Americans of the Quapaw Tribe. Arkansas as pronounced Arkansaw in their ancient native dialect means, "Land of many orange barrels", which eludes to the many unfinished highway construction projects in our great state. And that's the rest of the story. ....popgun

These people belong to the Dhegiha subdivision of the Sioux. It is believed that this group originally resided in the Ohio Valley. The tribe left this region following the Ohio River downstream to the Mississippi River and eventually to the land which is now Arkansas. Arkansas is also named after the Quapaw. In the mid 1600's the French explores, Marquette and Joliet, when traveling down the Mississippi used the Illini Indians as their guides. The guides referred to the Quapaw tribe as "Akansea" - People of the South Wind. This was the name the Illini Indians had given them in their own language, and that was how the French had written it down on their maps. The early Spanish or French explorers of the state gave it its name, which is probably a phonetic spelling for the Illinois word for the Quapaw people, who lived downriver from them. [/ QUOTE ] A truely sad fact is that some moron in the state senate is trying to pass a bill that clarifies the possesive spelling of Arkansas and want the possesive to read Arkansas's rather than the current Arkansas'. Anyone who's taken 8th grade english knows that a word ending in an "s" only requires a ' at the end to make it possesive. The shock on the state seems to be that the senate is wasting time on crap like that when we have real issues to deal with.
