Re: trying the bow

I'll be trying to take a bird in Ga with my bow this year. Never taken one but have come mighty close.

I'd say that a good blind would be helpful b/c the trick is getting drawn in close quarters.

I'd suggest shooting a broadhead with a large cutting diameter, i'm using the Rocket Hammerheads this year. If not, be sure to use a stopper behind your broadhead to keep the arrow in the bird.

Decoys very valuable to focus the birds attention away from you, again. . . the key is getting drawn.

Practice alot, turkeys have a small kill zone. . . dont want to wound them.

Re: trying the bow

A blind, a decoy or 2 at 5-7 yds from the blind. Sharp broadhead, hit'em in the hips on a broadside shot-can't run- can't fly. If your a little high you still get the goodies! Base of the beard on a bird facing you, middle of the back (just below where the wings attach ) on a bird facing away from you out of strut. Bird that is in strut facing away - grin.gif Texas heartshot!

Re: trying the bow

Good luck with the bow. I have killed two turks with the bow and have different results both times. The first bird I shot was a freaky deal. I let the arrow fly and felt it hit its mark but no bird fell. After assuming I missed I knocked another arrow in the cover of my blind and when I looked up another bird was jumping all over the dead turkey I thought I missed. He was hit but kept going on like he was not. I jumped out of my blind to rescue my dead trophy. The other bird I shot on a different day flew away with my arrow halfway thru him. After 2 1/2 hours I found that bird hung up in a tree dead as a door nail. I suggest a string tracker if you can stand it.

Re: trying the bow

I have heard many people say that a string tracker is a must since the bird will usually run some distance...unless you decapitate them. Might be worth considering. Would hate to lose a bird after the shot since there is usually no blood trail due to feathers. I would also suggest a blind as well, preferably one with a shoot-through screen.

Re: trying the bow

practice how you are going to hunt, you will always end up shooting from some weird position anytime you dont use a blind. This is the first year to use a blind, used it for deer and loved it.

last years success:

They are very deseiving, so be confident, remember they are about the size of a sack of potatoes the feathers can trick you.

Re: trying the bow

ya so will a tight pattern, ask huntinson'ovagun...

we had 2 birds and 7 or so hens workin us for an hour or so and when we finally decided to shoot we miss communicated and shot the same bird at first, then i got on the second. Anyway when he got to his bird it was an awesome bird with about 4 inches of loose beard strands laying on the ground we dunno what happend, i think he fell or rolled on it and it slapped in half, but we got 2 good birds out of it.

The upside to hunting turkey is they hardly ever stay in one position for long. Even in strut they move around. Have patience, you will get a good shot angle!
