ffl transfers?

When you buy a gun online, do you pay taxes in the state the gun was purchased from, plus the ffl fee or do you pay taxes in your state plus the ffl fee, or do you pay no taxes, just the ffl fee?

Have noticed some of the ffl transferees around here ask for local tax on the sale price of the gun, some do not, what is the norm? Tax locally is about 10% or more depending on what county.

Re: ffl transfers?

I believe you pay the tax for the state from which the gun was purchased but that would be to the seller and it would be included on the price of the gun. It seems to me there was no tax on mine which was made in MN. but I could be wrong. I know for sure that I only paid $25.00 for the FFL in my state plus tax on $25.00, not the gun itself. That was a totally seperate transaction to the rifle purchase itself.

Did that make any sense? Sometimes I scare myself!! LOL!

Re: ffl transfers?

If it's an out of state purchase, it would be the same as buying something from Cabelas. If they do not have a store in your state, they should not charge tax. The transfer dealer may charge tax if your state charges tax on services. New mexico does that. You get taxed using an ATM.

Re: ffl transfers?

Thanks for the replies. From what I have read online, some of the places that transfer around here say they charge as much as a flat 10 percent tax plus the ffl fee on all transfers. Guess I will stay away from those places, didnt think that was right.
