Re: OK, justify your maximum shot distance on game

Success on 3D's don't mean Doodly Squat on a live walking animal. Now that I don't shoot as much, 40 yards is my max when I have time to use a laser rangefinder. I'm pretty confident with judging up to 30 yards in virgin territory. Wind and animal actions will also limit the yardage. I shot very limited amount of 3D's last year. My last hoo-rah was shooting a 326 on 30 targets with ASA scoring at a local mom and pops 3D shoot. The yardages weren't ASA or IBO caliber "at the national level", so whoopty doo. My best finishes were 19th in Open B in ASA and 181st? out of 800+ during the IBO Worlds in Flatwoods, WV (1995) with a new bow I had shot with for 2 weeks in the MBO class. Those shoots were against folks from all over the country. I've been shooting a bow since 1991.

Re: OK, justify your maximum shot distance on game

1. What is your maximum self-imposed yardage? - Hunting is 30 yards. Target is 50 yards.

2. How long have you bowhunted? - I first picked up a bow 10+/- years ago. Shot strictly 3D and backyard target. I had a bad shoulder injury that took me out of shooting for a few years, getting back into it again. So, I'd say about 5-6 years of shooting bow with a 3-4 year injury break and now getting back into it again for the past year. Will be tackling bowhunting for the first time this year.

3. Do you practice frequently all year long? - Spring through Fall and I normally take the Winter off, unless it's a warm winter.

4. What types of archery activities do you participate in to hone your skills? - 3D targets in my backyard and a block target at different yardages, sometimes a 3D target course for fun.

5. What significant successes have you recently had in competitive archery? - Never was competitive in archery and never intend to be.

2. How long have you bow hunted? - 45 years (first 3 years it was just groundhogs)

3. Do you practice frequently all year long? -just enough in the winter months to keep the muscles in tune to shooting and then by March I get serious as bear season starts in April

4. What types of archery activities do you participate in to hone your skills? - I shoot mainly in the back yard, but have several targets spread over several acres that I approach from different angles and distances (helps with judging distances)

5. What significant successes have you recently had in competitive archery? - none, I can not stand that competitive jockeying that goes on

Re: OK, justify your maximum shot distance on game

Thanks for all your replies; this was most interesting.

Some of the questions were more subjective than others but I have used a couple of them to do a bit of data analysis. I'll be posting this in a separate thread momentarily. I was surprised to some degree.
