i bow-hunt because its a challenge and it is even more challenging to shoot them in the spine so that's where i aim. Hunt for the challenge. Its more fun!

[/ QUOTE ]

Bow-hunting by itself is an awesome challenge, but making it more of a challenge, by challenging the ethics of shot placements, at the expense of a living creature, is just plain wrong. That's not just my opinion either. That's just plain old common sense. crazy.gif

And to pass these unethical practises on to other new hunters as a "good challenge" is just plain wrong. It not only misinforms young hunters of a very unethical shot placement, but puts you as a hunter in a league of your own. crazy.gifooo.gif

Re: String Jumping?

Ok, admit it. You're just yanking our chain......right??? Nobody could be that goofy.

I'm sure your just trying to stir the pot a bit and see how many people you can get all bent out of shape.

Ha-ha... good joke. You had me going there.

Re: String Jumping?

The point is, that Byron Ferguson wouldn't even make a purposeful spine shot on a deer, as a matter of routine and with only one weeks practice before the season opens, you are totally unprepared as an archer to shoot at anything living past 10-15 yards.

Too be honest, I'm surprised that some of the guys in here didn't jump all over you for this, but then again, we do have a lot of fine polite, patient people in here. I think your just trying to pull everyone's chain here. You can't really be that naive.

Re: String Jumping?

65 yard spine shots with little or practice "because it's a challenge"? What a crock!

OK, I'm not a moderator. ooo.gif

Ladies and gentlemen, I suggest we ignore this "bowhunter".

Rhino, that's an interesting link. The author has lots of experience and makes some good points but there are some flaws in his statements. This is often a problem when someone presents their strongly held beliefs without proper controls on the data.

For example, he states that a deer dropped a full 8 inches in less than an eighth of a second (picture sequence). This simply defies the laws of physics as the formula for distance and object drops under the influence of gravity is d=1/2at*2, so it's

d = (0.5)(32)(0.125)(0.125) = 0.64 ft or 7.7 in.

...and that's using the full eighth of a second.

This also assumes the deer starts to drop exactly at the same time as the arrow is released - no reaction time required.

Splitting hairs? Perhaps, but if someone is trying to convince me of something, all the data needs to be accurate.

It's also my (ever so humble) wink.gif opinion that a lot of missed or poor shots that are attributed to string jump are nothing more than poor shots, period.

Anyhow, I do agree that deer can jump the string and I do as others have already stated - aim about heart-high.

Hummm......after all buckee you did sort of ask us if we couldn't find something nice to say then just don't say anything at all. That's why I added the link to the string jumping video after the initial post in question just in case there was some misunderstanding here. Other than that I'll say...............................................................and I do feel a little pressure on my chain too. grin.gif

Re: String Jumping?

How about string turning?

I shot a good buck that I'm convinced during the flight of the arrow had started to turn his body to run back the exact same way he came. It was about a 25yd shot broadside. The arrow entered to the right of where I was aiming and came out to the left of the opposite side, putting it cleanly through the vitals. As I replayed the shot in my mind I concluded that at the sound of the shot he began to spin his body to the right as if on a axis which left his vitals in the same area as I was aiming. He bounded back on his approach path but only made it about 50yds where he ran into a small tree and expired.

no it puts the deer down quick and it does not ruin any meat! its a more ethical shot in my opinion.

This was the same guy who said this:

This person is either full of it, or just trying to yank some chains here. Either way, will be ignoring this user from here on out.

Re: String Jumping?

Good pic Jim! that is the perfect example.

I had a buck spin in his tracks a few years back for that very reason. He hit the ground like a pile of bricks. After I got out of my tree stand I realized he spun and the arrow hit him in the neck. The leaves were tore up where he spun.

It was roughly a 20yd shot so he had to be QUICK.
