Trying to get into 3D

I've never shot 3D before and would like to try it for fun. I actually found a shop nearby has an indoor range and 30 target 3D course. How do you get involved? Do you have to go with a group of people or can you go yourself? Me, personally, I'm kind of a loner, lol. I'll probably drive down sometime and find out when they are open and such. Would at least like to go and practice....

Re: Trying to get into 3D

TG, it's a lot more fun when you shoot 3-D with friends. But a day on the range by yourself is a lot better than a day off the range, too.grin.gif

Find you a good pair of binoculars. Call the range and make sure that they allow rangefinders in case you have one. I'd recommend shooting with one first just to get used to ranging targets. I find indoor targets pretty difficult compared to woodland settings.

Normally they charge a standard fee for shooting the range.

Other than that, you're good to go.

Let me warn you though.....there are no 3DA meetings available!(3-D Anonymous) So when you get addicted, there's no known cure.grin.gif

Re: Trying to get into 3D

MCH is right on the money. It is a lot more fun to shoot with a group in my opinion. A lot of good natured ribbing, and I myself like shooting with people better then me. It gives me a goal.

Out of the 10 or so different places that I have shot 3d, only one allowed a rangefinder on the course. Binoculars are a must have. I started off with a cheap, autofocus pair, and they just didn't cut it for finding the scoring circles out at 35 plus yards. I ended up buying a quality pair of bino's, and can honestly say, that I used them hunting more then I ever thought I would. So, it was a win/win situation.

And lastly... he is so right about it being addicting. I shot my first 3D last July, and I don't think I have missed more them 1 or 2 since then! I just joinrd a local club this week that has a course set up year round. Plus, I'm looking to buy a 3D only bow in the very near future. My name is John, and I am an addict! grin.gif

Re: Trying to get into 3D

Ruth make sure you set a few arrows aside for hunting only. 3d can be a little rough on them. wink.gifshooting with friends is great. but a day on the range by yourself will allow you to concentrate on form and shot execution.

just dive on in and ask lots of questions. im sure the good natured people there will be more than willing to help.

also make sure you post up your scores. we like to see what everyones shooting and we also like to see how you improve each time you go.

if the weather holds here i will be shooting my first 3d tomorrow. grin.gif

Re: Trying to get into 3D

So how do you even get involved in a group? I'm guessing I should take a trip sometime down to the shop and see what's up..if they have leagues and such. Yeah I have a brand new dozen Beman arrows, 6 for hunting and 6 for 3D if I get into, and my older 6 Bemans I hunted with for the last 2 years are going to be practice only.

Re: Trying to get into 3D

It's alot more fun with company, but only the right company. If your local bow shop has a 3D range you can visit anytime, then find the one person who you trust and is experienced with shooting 3D. Let that person go with you and explain the ins and out of shot placement and judging yardage (the most important aspect of 3D) without the pressure of on-lookers and backed up groups on a busy 3D range. Do that first (several times if you can), get confident and then it will make it better when you "go public". But most of all, keep it fun without pressure and smile and laugh at yourself when you miss a target. It'll happen, even maybe a few times. And I've seen several "experienced archers" miss. Just be happy and glad you are getting a chance to go. Folks are too quick to forget that.
