Gardening...?

Any of you gals do any gardening in the spring/summer time? My mom has a fairly decent sized flower beds in our back yard. We do a vegetable garden also and I do my own garden in which I grow pumpkins and gourds...and since Andy gave up on potatoes, I do the potatoes because home grown reds are delicious...I actually grew a 1 pound red potatoe 2 years ago and this year had several 1/2 pounders... so anyone else garden and what do ya grow? cool.gif

Yeah, the seeds fall off our bird feeders and grow, lol. they seem to like sem-shady, most spots here. We have deliberately grown them before but we don't bother because they grow themselves. Try watering them with some flower food stuff. they get that when mom waters the rest of her flowers....and they get some horse manure thrown in.

The wife and I do some gardening. Did a little burning in part of our garden spot just yesterday, need to spray roundup, then burn off the rest of it. Not doing so much corn this year, but will have plenty of peppers, tomatoes, beans, and peas.

Yeah, what he said. We always do a big vegetable garden every year. Nothing like home grown. We like to get the kids involved. They learn that hard work and dedication pays off in the end. They love the corn, peas, etc... We made a little homemade salsa last year. Hope to make more this year.

Re: Gardening...?

And cheaper and healthier than buying it from a store. Don't know if any of you knew about the stuff a few vegtables got last summer? There was a virus thing that killed off the cucumbers....ours got it, they all died like in July and it wasn't from no water. Then there was a pumpkin thing that broke out....few of mine got it near the end of the growing season - those rotted like from the inside out...weird....

Tomatoes, Potatoes, Peppers, Corn, Green Beans (when I can keep the deer from eating them) Zucinni, Snow Peas, Cucumbers, Pumpkins, Catalope, anyway you get the picture. The funny thing is I married a city girl and her idea of gardening is going out and looking at it from a safe distance.......lol Her saving grace is she cooks like my grandmother.....lol

Re: Gardening...?

I plant one every year......veggies and of course pumpkins. This year i am down sizing.....gardening is a lot of work if the weeds get a hold of your garden. So this year i'll only plant 6 tomatoes and peppers...and keep up better with the weeds tongue.gifgrin.gif

First of all, I feel kind of tingly posting in here, lol. grin.gif

Yes, I grow lots of stuff, flowers and edibles, keeps me busy during the summer.

Taters are easy to grow Ruth. Best thing you can do for them is make a ditch about 9" deep and put some 16-16-16 in the bottom of the trench, about 1/8 of a cup per tater set, then cover that with about 2 or 3 inches of dirt, then set yer taters and bury them with about 2 inches of dirt. as the taters grow, fill in the trench and mound the trench about 6" high as the plant grows. check them every now and then towards the middle of summer as the taters will bust through the dirt and turn green.

Re: Gardening...?

For the last 4 years we have done a backyard garden. The kids really enjoy it, but this year I am giving up my garden space for a outdoor kennel for the dogs. I am thinking of doing large planters with tomatoes and green beens, but I haven't made an effort yet to start planning that. Does anyone have advice on container planting? My Grandfather is successful at it, but then again he lives in Texas and has plenty of time to devote to it.
