Fired Up Now!!!!

Went scouting Friday, Saturday and this morning. The birds are getting right! grin.gif

Friday morning I slipped in before dayling and sat down on a tree about 200 yards from where I'd heard some birds the prior weekend. I heard 4 birds gobbling on the roost in every direction except where they were last the prior weekend. I actually walked right past one in the dark and didn't know it until gobbling time started. Oops now he's between me and my escape route. ooo.gif A minor miscalculation on my part. 2 other birds are south and north of me too. When the closest bird flew down (the one I walked under) he came gobbling and drumming right toward me on an old logging road I was sitting next to so I crawled into the brush to get as far off the road as I could. He didn't give me much time and when his drumming got loud I laid down on my back with the back of my head to a tree. About 30 seconds later he came drumming by, passing inside the 20 yard line. shocked.gif After giving him 15 or 20 minutes to clear out I got out of there.

Saturday morning was relatively uneventfull with gobbling activity suppressed by an overcast sky and wind but I still heard 3 birds gobbling on the roost in the same area I was in the previous morning.

This morning was simply unbelivable. In the 16 years I've hunted on our hunting club I've never heard so many birds gobbling on the roost. I started where a logging crew is finsishing up that has been working 6 days a week and heard 6 birds in that area. Hearing more birds deeper in the woods I drove my cart further in to pin them down. The further in I went, the more birds I heard. shocked.gif Shocked is an understatement! I quit counting at 12 and all in all there had to be somewhere between 20 and 25 birds I heard this morning.

I had promissed to set a friends trail camera up in a spot for him on a 1/4 acre food plot. As I got to the last bend in the dirt road I could see 4 gobblers in the plot with 2 of them strutting for for 3 or 4 hens in there. I watched them for about 5 minutes and decided it was best to back off. I crawled to the closest tree on the road, set the camera up while laying on the ground and crawled out of there. On the way out I busted another gobbler on the side of the main dirt road accessing that part of our property.

WOW...come on March 15th. I'll be doing battle this coming Thursday morning. Now...the only question is...should I tell my buddy where his camera is or let him find out from the flash when he passes by it in the dark grin.gif He has first dibbs at that spot anyway.

Re: Fired Up Now!!!!

I'm so ready for Thursday morning too!

My weekend was pretty eventful so I didn't make it to the woods. smirk.gif This past weekend was youth weekend so my buddy took his daughter. He said he heard at least 10 gobblers on the roost. He called one up within 20 yards but it was behind a blown down treetop so his daughter didn't have a clear shot.

There's a pretty good chance of rain Thursday morning but that won't stop me from being there. grin.gif

Saw that too Tracy but I'll deal with it if it happens in my neck of the woods.

As I recall, the rain is your friend. wink.gifgrin.gif
