Questions regarding Scent

Well, Sept. is a long ways off (deer season begins here then) so I have lots of time to think of crazy stuff to get opinions on and pick everyones brain. I see so much regarding scent and playing the wind how about this. Munchies? Does anyone ever consider that their favorite stand munchie might be giving them away, how about some input/opinions on that? Also, the hunting cloths, we take lots of care to keep them isolated from the gas fumes in the garage and other stuff around the house (keep um in a water proof bag filled with cedar chips and buried in the back yard, LOL) so how about sittin around the campfire in them if your lucky enough to have a hunt camp/cabin to get away to. Any thoughts on that, do ya think they might pick up on the smoke smell? (Deer/Turkey/others)??

Re: Questions regarding Scent

Welcome to the forums.

Some will tell you natural wood smoke makes for a good cover scent. Me, I hunt in the hills and swamps behind the house, stands are all within walking distance. I use plastic totes lined with cedar limbs to keep my clothes smelling natural.

Re: Questions regarding Scent

The only time I take any munchies in the stand with me is on all day sits. In that case they are in zip loc bags. Any wrappers left over go back in the zip locs.

As far as my hunting cloths (for deer hunting), I wear charcoal lined suits. They are taken out of air tight containers outside and put on right before I leave to go hunt. I reactivate them at least after every 2 days of hunting. I try to never expose my hunting cloths or even my fanny pack, gear, etc. to foreign scents. Any layering of clothing I wear under my suits on a hunt is washed in scent free detergent before I wear it again.

As far as turkeys go, you don't have to worry about scent. If turkeys could smell us, we sure wouldn't kill many turkeys.

So basically leave the Cool Ranch Doritoes and Funyons at home!

Yeah, actually you probably in all honesty want to avoid those types of snacks right before a hunt as well. Your breath while you might not be able to smell it yourself will give off those odors that will alert deer.

I stay up above 15ft or higher (usually 20+) and use HS scent soap, deoderant, shamppo and sport was. I have used their fresh earth cover scent with great success. This year I'll be doing all that except I'll be using a scent lock suit so I won't be using a cover scent.

[/ QUOTE ] Unless I'm hunting all day, I don't take snacks. If I do, it's usually fruit or sweet smelling stuff like little debbie's fudge rounds or oatmeal cream pies. Wrappers go in a pocket when I'm done.

I usually have about 16oz water bottle, but rarely drink more than 1/2 of it.

Pretty much the same as the other guys. My top layer is usually in a bag untill I'm ready to walk into the woods. All other layers are scent free in a air tight container.

Unless you are wearing a carbon suit don't worry about camp smoke unless you're burning plastic.

Re: Questions regarding Scent

I use HS Deodorant, shampoo, scent spray, clothes wash and keep my clothes in a sealed bag with the HS Earth Scent Wafer. Seems to work, gets me in close to deer (15 ft stand) and they don't pick up my scent. As far as snacks, fig newtons (quiet) and I put them in a sandwich baggie. (also quiet). If I do take snacks in noisy wrappers, it they will be in my pocket, I repack them in baggies before I take them in the field. Also, spray down with the HS Scents spray once I get on stand.
