Bucks don't shed antlers

Ok, I've come to one of two conclusions. Either bucks really don't shed their antlers, or they dig a hole shake them off and cover 'em back up.

I've got in three FULL days of looking in and I haven't found one antler yet. The only horn I know anybody has found was a buddy of mine yesterday who almost ran over it with his 4-wheeler. Talk about covering a lot of ground with not much results.

Can any body tell I'm just a little frustrated. Guess the only thing I can do is keep looking.

Haha.. I know what you mean.. I've been looking since Late January and I've found nothing.

Maybe the land you're searching just doesn't have the habitat for wintering deer? Or maybe there aren't alot of bucks in your area to wear antlers are easy to find? I mean, because the more bucks in the area, the higher your chances are of finding sheds, right?

I know how ya feel! I've been through alot of decent looking areas with tons of sign...all I managed was a chewed up main beam yesterday probably last year's. But we still have alot of snow on the ground that is melting so there's hope still...hang in...you'll find one!

I hear you.

I think the difference between us and some of the folks out west is the lay of the land. I'm not sure, but I think we deal with more forested area and land that has more hills to it.

I think there is a lot of truth in that!!!

We have a lot of Timber on my area to look in. Those horns are tuff to see with all the brown leaves, sticks and what not. frown.gif

I have had a bad year so far too. I have walked A LOT and have yet to find a single shed. I normal find 10 or 12 a year but this year no such luck...YET cool.gif

Re: Bucks don\'t shed antlers

This is the area I've been concentrating on. It's about a mile long and maybe 1/4 mile wide; beyond the 1/4 mile, there's a wide open bench and then the hillside gains some serious elevation, also with very little vegetation. The deer travel back and forth between 'my' strip and the hills and are much more concentrated when they are in the strip. There's good browse and good bedding areas and I usually see 30+/- on each trip.

I imagine a lot of the antlers are being dropped on the hills above but it is so vast that it would be a real task to cover it effectively. For now I'll keep pounding this stuff:

P.S. Note that there's lots of brown stuff here, too, for the antlers to hide in. They are, indeed, hard to spot.
