Is there such a thing as too close?

Re: Is there such a thing as too close?

I had a doe stick her head right inside my grass blind shooting window, one day. The tip of my broadhead was probably about 12" away from her nose. grin.gif That was too close, because there was nothing I could do but sit still and enjoy the moment. grin.gif

Straight down in a stand is too close but they'll open up some room with a little patience.

Had a few too close at ground level before too (inside 5 yards). Only because I couldn't draw without risking them seeing movement.

I dont think that there is such a thing as to close. When season comes around and I am practicing a lot, I do it out the stand with a 3d deer and put it under the stand, 2 yards out, 5 yards out 7 yards out and so on and possition it quartering at me, away, broadside, facing me, and so on. I do this so that I am ready for any shot possible. seem to work out pretty good.

It is again just like your max distance, it all depends on what you feel comfortable shooting and what you have practiced. A couple years ago I had 1 walk up under my ladder stand and lick the rungs of the ladder. I had to wait for him to walk away a little in order to get a shot. Maybe 5 yards.

slughunter....there have been 2 occasions I recall helping 2 different friends clean their deer that had old broadheads in their back bones. The old wounds were both completely healed up. One had a large puss pocket around it. Both of the hunters that fired those arrows obviously thought the same thing you did but they sure didn't break the spine on those 2 deer they shot, whoever they were.

I do all my hunting from the ground and there definitely is such a thing as too close. Like buckee said, there's not a darn thing you can do when they almost step on you. I've been busted so many times when trying to draw on a close buck. My minimum shot to date has been 11 yards, but I like 20; you can get away with quite a bit more movement.

Re: Is there such a thing as too close?

On one of the rainiest days I have ever hunted I decided to stay on the ground. I sat in the crotch of an Oak tree that had three trunks. After about 30 minutes of sitting still I decided I needed a better angle if I was ever going to be able to draw my bow for a shot. When I leaned forward to practice drawing my bow there was a 10 point sniffing my boot. He blew and ran, I screamed like a little girl blush.gif and of course there was no shot taken. That's too close tongue.gif.

Too close from a tree stand isn't good, chances are you're only going to get one lung. A spine shot is ideal for a straight down shot, but I'd rather have the deer at least 10 yards or so out to get a double lung. On the ground however, I don't think there is such a thing as TOO close. As long as your arrow can get off of the string..
