You should be able to cut the hair right off. If not boil it off.

Whiten it up you can submerge the skull into a pot of water, very little bleach, and preoxide. That will whiten you skull up.

Yep i second that

You may not want to use the wifes pots and do it outside or in a shed grin.gif the smell is not for the weak heart

do i have to worry bout getting bleach on the antlers

[/ QUOTE ]

First boil the skull in just plain old water in a pot OUTSIDE. Some people say add dawn soap to it, I always forget to do that so not 100% sure how it works but suppose to help.

After getting all the meat and hair off and the skull cools off.

Then put skull into a pot. Now add water, bleach and peroxide. More than likely your base area of the horns will get into the water, so they could turn a lighter color. But you can use some stain to darken them back up.

You can also use an old toothbrush to srub on the skull some to help whiten it up too. Now keep your pot of bleach, water, peroxide.

Now let your skull DRY!!. As it dries it will whiten up MORE! If you are not satisfied then put it back in your pot of water, bleach and peroxide to sit a little longer.

Dont ever, mix BLEACH & PEROXIDE first off. Second only simmer, not boil using Armor Hammer Washing soda. This will all be done after you skin the head out removing the hide. When all said and done, then you can soak the skiull in the peroxide. Skulls should never be placed in bleach.

Re: getting hair off a skull

The bleach is an acid and as acid will, it eats at the material. In this case, the bone/skull and it will become brittle.

Hair coloring peroxide from a beauty supply will work well too. I get the white peroxide from the beauty supply in town. Some people use the drug store type peroxide too and get similar results.

After the skull is free of meat.

I make a paste with the sal sada and peroxide and coat the skull with it evenly. Mask off the antler bases, they are suceptible to whitening too if you don't protect them. After a day or 2, I hose it off, but rinse it lightly. You don't want the water pressure to break anything.

Once it dries good, you could coat it with a good non yellowing varnish or clear poly urethane finish to protect it.
