Guest malikai
Hey folks, I have a pretty serious problem that I need help with. You see Latley I have been walking around my farm looking for sheds, and recently I found a dead deer (only the legs). I didnt think much of it considering that deer die alot because of natural elements and predators. But my dad said that he had heard a loud gunshot 5 days ago, in the woods that connects to mine. And yesterday when I was looking for sheds I saw a deer run from the neighbors valley into the corn field, I didnt think much of it, however a half hour later I was in my prairie (which is just across from the corn field). And I hear a HUGE rifle gunshot behind me... I yelled "WHATS GOING ON???" Nobody answered. I have suddenly become afraid that there is a poacher on my neighbors property (my neighbor dosent live on that land he just owns it). What should I do? I have thought about calling the DNR but I dont know if I should, considering my tracks are on the neighbors property... What should I do a about this possible poacher guys????? Thanks, Cheers, Joe

wtnhunt
Re: POACHERS! Problem is some places the warden will not go out on calls unless the owner of the property calls them. Would not hurt to give them a call though, they might be at a slow time now.
slaw
Re: POACHERS! I would call them and tell them of my suspicions, and tell him that you'll put his number on speed-dial for the next time you hear a shot.

Tecumseh
Re: POACHERS! I had a big problem this year with poachers where I hunt at during deer season.I found two buck's with just thier antlers cut off the skull and a few does left just laying, just shot and left dead.I called the game warden I'm working with him to catch the idiots doing this.I'd say call I may never catch who did this but it's better than doing nothing at all.You may also want to call local law enforcement also. magnatecsteve
Re: POACHERS! Game wardens in Indiana don't need proof. If they have reason to suspect, they can search and seize without question. They have more authority than the local law enforcement.

Guest bruteshooter
Re: POACHERS! My wife and I found two full chests and spines along with some legs that were all big size. Of course no head skulls anywhere. Fresh meat left on legs, cape sitting next to it all. Apparently dumped along remote roadside area. Figured it was 24-28 hours ago. Anyway, without hesitation, we called DNR on our way back home. They asked us to turn around and meet them there. So we did. They were quick to arrive, checked things out fully and will be watching closely to say the least. VERY satisfied with IDRN in this case. Guest malikai
Re: POACHERS! Yes but the Poachers are not on my land, they are in a woods connected to mine... and I am not even sure if it is poachers, its a possiblility, considering I've found deer legs and heard single gunshots By publicity, is I dont want too much attention to my place, I dont want dnr walking around there 25/7 checking for lawbreakers... annoying. toddpipkin
Re: POACHERS! [ QUOTE ] By publicity, is I dont want too much attention to my place , I dont want dnr walking around there...... [/ QUOTE ] As a former G&F Enforcement Officer, these are the questions that immediately jump to mind -- What do you have to hide? Illegal baiting? Illegal Trapping? Dope? Worse? Deer season is long over. You can't be worried about the officers ruining your deer hunting unless you yourself are hunting out of season. Why are your tracks on your neighbor's property? What were you doing there? Did you have permission to be doing it? Your wording makes it seem like you didn't. Are you hesitant because you don't want to get another neighbor (friend) p/o'ed at you? I say another neighbor, as it seems that the shooter knows of the absentee landowner situation. Must be someone close. You probably know or at least strongly suspect, the identity of the shooter already. These are NOT accusations, but simply the questions an officer MUST ask himself EVERY time he goes into a situation attempting to locate someone who is armed, possibly already violating the law, probably totally camouflaged and hiding, and who may resist being apprehended. You have three choices here. 1. Get used to poachers, because if you don't stop them now, on your neighbor's land, they WILL be on your land soon. They will figure that if you stand by and do nothing now, you will do the same when they are on your land, especially if you know them. And if you DO say something to them, they will throw the fact that you were on the neighbor's property also in your face. 2. Do something about it yourself. Get your neighbor's consent to be overseer for his property, catch and identify the poacher yourself (or maybe it's just a target-practicing trespasser) and sign a warrant for his arrest. 2.Call the people who are trained to handle it, and give them ALL the information concerning the situation, so they can do their jobs. ohiobuckhunter
Re: POACHERS! i would leave it alone if it's not your property then it's not your problem and without a firm conclusion do you really want them coming out there when your hunting tromping through the woods scarring everything withing 2 miles??? i know i would be kicking myself if i called then they end up coming through there one october day running off they deer i'm going after.jmo

[/ QUOTE ] Chances are the game officers would not have the time to hang around your property round the clock. Poachers are not just your problem, and even if you think they are just on the neighboring property, chances are they are on yours and others as well when you are not around. Unless there is something you are hiding, I dont see why you would NOT want to get this the attention it needs. If you really wanted to hear opinions on this then listen to what is being overwhelmingly told to you here and do something about it. If not, you should not ask these types of questions in the future, and might consider going on now and having a mod lock this thread up. BKE
Re: POACHERS! This whole thread has me scratching my head. 1st off this is a no brainer, call the wardens even if it is "just a possibility". POACHERS=THIEVES. 2nd is, I am amazed that I would see advice such as ohiohunters (it's your opinion OH and you have every right to express it but I'm glad to see this time it's in the minority) and 3rd is that where I am from poachers usually mean meat hunters(thieves) so the situation in Grizz 109's reply is even more infuriating, sounds like some sicko getting off by just needlessly killing something. Malikai, good luck with this and also with the property owner you refer to (maybe you can become NEIGHBORS). And to Grizz 109, good luck to you also. I hope they can find a nice cold/drab cell for the person(s) responsible.
