What's holding me back....

I posted awhile back about maybe going back to school in the fall for nursing. It is still something I'm thinking of doing....but it seems everytime I think I find what want to do, I start to have doubts and such. Some of you maybe remember me wanting to do athletic training but the college dropped the major, so I did outdoor rec. Probably one mistake was staying instead of transferring to somewhere else. But there is a reason for it. I still wish I could do athletic training, but I can't really get any more fed. aid because of doing 4 years already, and can't afford to go away out of state for an entry level master's. While at Houghton, I guess I dreamed of doing athletic training, and I really admired the trainers there. Looked up them is more like it,lol. Maybe I just don't want to let go wanting to be like one of them. I guess maybe I should just let go and move on. I don't know what I can apply from athletic training to nursing. Anyway I just wanted to voice out my dilemma because I know there's some great people on here who will listen. I think God is telling me to let go and move on to nursing, but it's hard. I just don't want to forget athletic training and what I learned....Guess God is testing me....

ruth, from what i see in local newspapers, the nursing field is in big demand for nurses,,i don't know anything about athletic trainers, but i am sure you would have better luck and brighter future in nursing, as the days, weeks, and months go by, that could be time going to school in nursing. I don't know if God is testing you, or trying to lead you, either way, it will be up to you to make the move. Good luck, with your decision..

Re: What\'s holding me back....

Well I love medicine so no matter what, I'm doing something with medicine. Guess I just hate to give up the memories of being an athletic trainer. I had dreams of being a trainer and working along side the other trainers, lol. But dreams aren't always reality. Nursing actually makes about the same $ if not more than AT with a Masters. I don't want to be in debt the rest of my life...that I know, lol. It's just that taping ankles, knees, and the such is soo much fun, lol! And learning different muscle tests and testing for different injuries I enjoyed.

Something I realized sitting here is that I'm not on this earth for myself....I'm here to do God's duty. Nursing to me, while not exactly athletic training, would be a great way to minister to people. Not necessarily being preachy, but showing His love and being an example. I learned this at my internship....rough in the beginning but when I was working with the kids and tried to set an example of Christ's love, that's what it's all about it. I'm serving God, not myself.

Re: What\'s holding me back....

Might want to check these links Ruth. There's no comparison in job availability and salary.

Athletic Trainers

Registered Nurses

Having said that, I'm a firm believer that you have to do what makes you happy.

One of these days you just might have to spread the wings and leave the roost Ruth. Money is out there if you're willing to look, apply, or simply go into debt. It's an investment in your future. Nursing is such a demand field, some hospitals are offering tuition aid, you might want to check into that.

Re: What\'s holding me back....

My cousin is a nursing major. She seems to realy enjoy what she is going into. She has worked in Nursing homes and is scheduled to graduate next year. She has a line that I have always found funny but kind of true. "Nurses are angles in comfortable shoes." If you think about it, it kind of makes sence. The nurses work right along side the docs doing alot to help them only with 1/4 of the money spent on school. Im not sure if this will help you at all but it is just my view on nursing. Good luck with what ever you pick. I am sure you will succeed.

Re: What\'s holding me back....

I think you should probably sit down and really debate with yourself what is best for you and how much drive and determination you have to accomplish what you've decided. and once you do that stick with it i've seen several post where your doing this and then you decide to do something else instead make a decision and stick with it going back and forth will get you no where you have'nt even started one of these goals yet and your allready going back and forth so what happens once you start one then switch to the other i know i don't have enough money to switch back and forth between the two either one of those choices are expensive enough JMO sorry if this post upsets you but you asked for our opinon and that is the best way i can describe what i think good luck with whatever you choose

Re: What\'s holding me back....

Ruth, you could likely apply quite a bit to nursing from what you have already taken. Would think you could get your nursing degree in 2 years or less.

Nursing has so many avenues, and could still possibly lead into something that might parallel your interest in athletic training. But you need to do what it is that will make you happy. Just ask yourself if you could be happy working as a nurse in some of the jobs that are out there in your area.

With whatever you do, best of luck.

Re: What\'s holding me back....

Ruth.....Well where do I begin.....You have a good head on your shoulders and you have already figured out the most important thing....you aren't here for yourself.

Having said that you still have to do something you enjoy. If you go to work everyday hating your job you will be miserable.....no matter how much it pays!

I am a paramedic and looking to get my Nursing degree. I work full time with a paramedic service in a small rural area where I am a supervisor. Part time I work at one of the larger hospitals in Memphis. I work hand in hand with nurses everyday. Lots of great people and MOST of them love their jobs. The great thing with nursing is that you have a lot of options to choose from......everything from ER, Surgery, ICU, I could go on forever.

One thing I noticed.....you already have a BS degree. Not sure if there are any programs up there but down here there are several programs where you can get your BSN in a year if you already have a BS degree. That would be what I would look into. There really are no hold backs with these type programs. From what I have been told it doesn't matter what your BS is in!

That is what I would look into. Hope this helps!

Re: What\'s holding me back....

I have 4 little letters for you Ruth. CRNA. If you want to do something that's very intricately involved in medicine but not to the level of a Dr. but more than a RN this is the job for you and is in very very high demand. It has to do with anestesia (sp) but you are involved in surgeries very minimally with a pay of around $175,000/yr or more depending on where you live. You get the benifit of not having to pay for malpractice ins. but the pay of some Dr's. and the ability to work anywhere in the US you want with the option of a contract for as little or as long as you like. Less headaches are involved with it since you are not a direct care giver and once the surgery's over, you just write your notes and report and head off to hunt or relax. I know of a lot of RN's that are envious they didn't take this route. You deal with both general, emergency and OB surgeries. Good luck and please look into it. I think you'll find a lot of your classes will affect your current degree.

Re: What\'s holding me back....

Nursing and athletic training can go somewhat hand in hand. There are MDs who specialize in sports medicine and if you get involved with such a practice there will be many aspects of both worlds. Most of the patients would be younger, mostly healthy, people who have had sports related injuries that require either surgery or possibly just conservative treatment. As a nurse there are many options. You could even have your own practice in collaboration with a physician in a sports rehab/athletic training setting. Your options are endless.
