need2hunt
Me and the girls went to check out guns tonight. The Remington Youth Jr gun fits my 10 year old real good and goes for $269 or I can get the Youth Combo (includes a rifled slug barrel) for $469. The length of pull is shorter for my 7 year old so I'll have to have the stock shortened if i get her one. My other option is I can get a Mossberg Youth gun for $299. I've never been a Mossberg fan but this gun comes with BOTH barrels, the barrels are ported for less recoil and they are fully camo'd (it's mossy oak but for $169 less I think I could deal with it ) Anyway my question concerning the guns are the barrels are only like 18" long. How or does this fact affect patterning? Will it just not pattern as well at longer ranges?
M00N
Re: Anyone shoot a Youth 20 Gauge I shoot a short barrel, non-youth, Remington 20-Gauge turkey gun (20" barrel, 40.5" overall length). I shot some of the various brands of youth 20-gauges before settling on the one I eventually got. The only major difference I noticed on the short barrel youth guns, the one I eventually got, and the full sized barrel ones was the shorter barrel guns had more recoil. A good recoil pad does the trick to reduce that problem greatly, though, and if more recoil needs reduced you can always get the barrel ported. For me any longer barrel than 20" is uncomfortable to shoot as far as Turkey guns go because of my short stature. As far as patterning my short barrel gun, I've never run into a problem with getting an equally good pattern to the longer barrels of the same gauge with my gun. You just have to find out what the gun like to shoot best as far as brand of shells, shot size, and type of choke. When you find the right combo they'll shoot just as well and accurate as the longer barrels. At least this is what I've experienced with shooting a 26" barrel 20-Gauge, 18" barrel 20-Gauge, and 20" barrel 20-Gauge.
Guest dedicatedmarine
Re: Anyone shoot a Youth 20 Gauge i used to have the 20 guage youth, but grew out of it and traded it in for a 12 ga. I shot a lot of deer with that 20 ga. My opinion, a 20 guages doesn't have that much recoil as a 12, so the porting wouldn't be as important, however, i dont think id suggest starting her out on a 12 ga. I was terrified of it when i first started hunting. Don't know why, but i've always a remington fan, the 870's never let me down
maddhunter
Re: Anyone shoot a Youth 20 Gauge My son is shooting the 870 youth 20ga. We patterned it out to 30yrds and it does wonderfull. He is shooting Rem. Nitro turkey loads, 3", #6s, superfull Rem. turkey choke. I was very impressed with it. It also patterned #6 heavy shot well too. The target with his 20ga at 30yrds had about the same amount of pellets in a 10" circle as my 12ga. does at 40yrds. And don't forget the Limbsaver Recoil Pad, the small fit's Cole's 20ga nicely and won't slide off. I removed the but plate to install it. wtnhunt
Re: Anyone shoot a Youth 20 Gauge Gary, I have looked at the remington youth 870 for my wife and oldest daughter, and will probably get one this year for them. Wal mart sells the youth 870 here for like $268, comes with a modified choke. They sell the youth turkey model for around $320 if I remember right. If you went that route, you could always pick up a rifled choke if you are looking to add the ability to deer hunt with the gun. For pads, I am going to go against what others say about the limbsaver, for a youth or small ladies gun, I would get a pachmayer if it is available over the limbsaver pad. The pachmayer is a better pad in my opinion. Remington does also have their R3 pad which is supposed to be better. Not sure if the factory pad on the youth guns is the R3 or not though. 5SHOT
Re: Anyone shoot a Youth 20 Gauge My son is is small for his age. He just turned 11 in December. Years ago I bought a remington Youth 870 20ga for him and it is still a lttile too big for him so I just bought a Mossberg 500 Super bantam Youth Turkey gun and it fits him great. It is only about 5.25lbs and it comes in Realtree HD Green camo. It comes with 2 spacers so you can add on to the stock as the child grows. The forearem is about 1.5-2 inches closer to the trigger than the Remington was which made the gun alot more comfortable for my son. We got an even trade in so this gun runs around 349-369 depending on the store. We did not shoot the gun yet but I am getting ready to pattern it as soon as the two feet of snow melts!!! I still think a Remington is a better built gun than Mossberg but for a smaller sized child this Mossberg is perfect... good Luck.
