HOWA GUNS

OK guys who's been around them, what have you heard? I want the good, the bad, the ugly.

I'm wanting to get a gun to shoot 500+ accurately. I currently have a REM 700 VS in a 223 and for fun we shoot golf balls as 300,400,500 yards. Well I can smoke em at 300. Now 400 I can most days. But a lot of it depends on the wind. 500 occasionally. But my little 223 bullet does not do as well at 400, 500 yards in the wind. So I'm wanting a new gun to shoot that 500 plus yards.

Will the Howa meet these needs or am I crazy. I like the look of it but its prices a lot cheaper. Is the saying "you get what you pay for" true in this instance or not??

So any input would be great!! smile.gif

My father bought a 22-250 with a sporter barrel right off the shelf at CABELA'S. It is a great little gun. At 200yrds. it will shoot 3/4 to 1in. groups.

Re: HOWA GUNS

I think Howa makes the Japanese made Weatherby's. Or atleast they used to. Those are quality made guns. We all know what Weatherby expected of a rifle. So Howa must've have toed the line and made some great guns for the Weatherby name to be on it.

Japanese craftsmanship in firearms has always been high quality.

I have a Weatherby Vanguard in 7mmRem mag that is a tack driver. Got it from Wally World for like $299,

It is just a good bolt action, maybe even a little better than others that are competitively priced.

Re: HOWA GUNS

If you can get a decent fast twist barrel you can easily use your 223 out to 500 yards. Get a 70+ gr VLD and push it through a 1:9" or 1:8" twist barrel and you are good to go.

The 168 gr Match in a 308 Win has always been a long range smokin load.

I highly recommend getting some good glass on top of the rifle to be shooting 500+ yards. The same goes for a good bedding job. Fully match prepped brass and hold into the wind. One thing I have found that is almost as important as good optics is a good wind flag or a set of wind flags. Learn how to read them and how to use sighters and you are good to go.
