Eye glasses and Archery?

Well father time has finally found me.

I eludued him near 40 years but he crept up over this winter and struck.

Looks like I finally need eye glasses and have some concerns while shooting.

Mainly the way some of us sort of look over our noses while shooting.

Anchor points, etc...?

Any advice for those who shoot and hunt with eye glasses?

Not sure if I can get contacts either (I did not ask at my appt) with some funky stuff my eye are doing now and that I may be in bi-focols too. crazy.giffrown.gif

Re: Eye glasses and Archery?

I feel your pain. It really doesn't harm your style.

First, you near or far sighted? I need glasses to shoot, but I'm sure you found out, glasses are not cheap these days, frightfully expensive in most cases. I had trouble making contact with my kisser button with the frame I was wearing.

Believe or not, I ended buying a cheap pair of plastic frames I use just for hunting that worked out great. Contacts were not a great help. The sight pins were fuzzy and that was annoying.

I recommend a plastic frame for hunting. If by any chance the sun hits you in the face, no chance of reflecting liek metals frames will do. I bought a pair of camo workshop glasses that fit over the frame to keep the sun out of my eyes. So far, so good. No deer in while, but at least I can see what I'm doing. LOL

Hope it helps

Ray

Re: Eye glasses and Archery?

I've worn glasses since I started shooting a bow. Honestly can't tell you if they hindered me or not.

I have noticed a few things though. For one, its hard to wear a face mask. Most face masks will funnel your breath up to your eyes and on those cold mornings, it will fog your glasses up.

Also, there are times when I'm shooting 3-D, that I will draw and anchor only to realize that my glasses have ridden down on my nose. I'll have to draw down and push them back up.

Re: Eye glasses and Archery?

It does help thank you Ray.

I can see better the closer things are. (Far sighted?)

BUT he wants to put me in the 1st level or weakest level of bi-focols for reading as well. I am not illegal to drive without glasses so this is mainly for my shooting, both firearms and archery, and for target aquisition during hunting.

I had trouble seeing points on bucks far away last fall and with antler restrictions in VT now I dont wanna make that mistake.

I do not use a kisser button and find I never really could consistantly. My anchor is my right index fingers main knuckle nestled into the depression behind my right ear and jaw hinge area.

I am hoping the frames do not interfer with that...

Re: Eye glasses and Archery?

Fogging comes from exhaling and occurs on the inside of your lens. There is something out there called "Cat Crap" that suppose to be the best, (even have a web site) but I was never able to get any. Last year a friend gave me some KleerVu and it worked great, not to expensive. (www.kleervu.com).

There is also something out ther called FogTech which suppose to be just as good. . I can get you web link if you want.

Someone asked me to check out these glasses out

that would be near-sighted...i have had glasses since i was in kindergarden...a loooong time ago smile.gif i have never had a problem shooting my bow with them..not sure how bi-focals would effect it...as for face masks...yeah it kinda stinks, when i buy a face mask, i make sure that the opening in big enough, or it fits comfortable enough for me to put it under my nose instead of on top of it, seems to help a bit

Re: Eye glasses and Archery?

I wear glasses. I had my glasses before my bow, I also use a kisser button. I think the kisser in the corner of my mouth, and the nose tip touches the string. The string does not come close to the frame. I do know that I look out the very left side of the right lens. So far I have no problems shooting. But then I wear them every waking moment too! I think with time you will learn to adjust ever so slightly. After while you will not even notice!

I'm near sighted, but I wear contacts when shooting bow or gun. Never had a problem with them yet. I've had fogging and moisture problems with glasses though the few times I tried to hunt or shoot with them. Thinking about the laser surgery eventually to rid of even the contacts.

Re: Eye glasses and Archery?

I've worn glasses most my life. The sucking part is steaming up in early bow season. As for hunting, it doesn't hurt my shooting. But at 3D's, I couldn't use a scope clearly to get a real benefit. If I could see the lines on a 3D, it (the clarifier) required so much light that was never present in the woods (only in a field). I assume different eye strengths are different and get different results. But for hunting, only steaming up is a problem. And for competitive 3D's there isn't many pros (at the national level)wearing glasses, so take that for what it's worth. I hope to get contacts this year. Maybe I can see my pins more clearly. I've never tried them yet.

Re: Eye glasses and Archery?

Well I don't wear any, just a contact in my right eye from getting poked in the eye when I was 8 by a pine needle and losing my "real" lens. Andy wears his glasses while hunting and doesn't seem to have a problem. I would guess though fogging up would be a pain in the butt. There is suppose to be like anti-fog/glare stuff you can put on the lenses. I had some when I had to wear bifocals when I first injured my eye.

Re: Eye glasses and Archery?

I wear glasses and contacts. I notice that it is better with contacts for me as it increases my periphial (sp?) vision. I too had problems with my lenses (glasses) fogging up, but sometimes on those earlier mornings with dry eyes it's more comfortable to put on glasses.

I beleive they now have contacts that support a bifocal situation but not sure. Your doctor could tell you better than I. I am also far-sighted with very bad astigmatism (blurry vision).

Re: Eye glasses and Archery?

For my 50th birthday I was told I needed glasses. BIFOCALS, no less! My brother who has been wearing glasses since he was a teenager never let me forget that they were nothing but a pain in the ... Well, he was right.

Not the end of the world! You will adapt. Takes a little time and patience. I am sure you will adjust your shooting a bit. I found that I needed to change my anchor to have the string right on my nose to avoid the blurrrry spot you have with bifocals. To tell you the truth I have never shot better.

Fogging is a problem, but there again you will learn how to deal with it.. I use Parkers Perfect to coat them.

Yes, they do my mother wears bifocal contacts. They actually work better than she thought they would. There's a couple brands that make them so far she only likes one particular brand of them.

Re: Eye glasses and Archery?

I have been wearing glasses now for Ohh...16 or 17 years now. The only hinderance I have found glasses to be is the fogging issue. I have and use that cat crap, but I'm running out and the original catcrap is hard to find. Gander sold some stuff made as a anti fig, Scope dope. It was made by the people who made cat crap, but it does not work the same.

I hate wearing glasses and am seriously considering laser surgery. I hope I am a candidate.

But outside of raindrops and fog on the glasses, I have found no problems in shooting my bows.

Re: Eye glasses and Archery?

I am not as concerned about the fogging or rain as there are products that help with that. I am prepared for that sucking. LOL

I was more worried about the actual sight picture or diffraction of looking threw a lense at an odd angle and how that effects the sight picture and shot.

I suppose its relative to what prescription you have, size of lense, etc...

I will have to just "see" for myself. LOL

Thanks for all the input.

Re: Eye glasses and Archery?

Just read an article in Bowhunting Magazine about glasses. One reader said, glasses that have bi-focals. Its better to have the kind of bi-focals that blend then have the edges. The edges distort the pins, where as the blending kind allow for better viewing. Thought I would pass this on for you!
