coles
well guys i finally found the time to get out and put a few rounds through her. i had 3 different boxes of shells. some federal fusion 180s, plain jane federal 180s and some federals with 180gr accubonds. which one do you think shot the best. of course the accubonds which were twice as much per box as the other ones. but she shot really good. it got pretty warm today so it started throwin them. then i had to get back to town to get my pickup worked on before i head back to school tomorrow. so i still have some fine tuning to do but you can bet that she will be ready by spring black bear season!!!!!! Shaun_300
Re: shot the 300WSM today Sure is a nice caliber eh Cole? I love mine! I find the Winchester Supreme Ballistic Tip 180s shoot good out of mine. Also have tried the Remington Corelokt 150gr, they work well too. ky_deerhunter_77
Re: shot the 300WSM today My couz loves his Winchester in the 300WSM w/ 180 ballistic. Every year one shot one deer for the last 4 or 5 year. His dad got his 3 years ago. After he zero it at 50 yds, he drop a doe at 200 yds. There both great guns. bowana
Re: shot the 300WSM today Try the 180 grain Fail safes. I anchored two Mulies that are true trophies. One Mulie was 300+ pounds. Broke both legs and opened the whole bottom. The 300WSM is a great cartridge.

[/ QUOTE ] Know whatcha mean. Some of those days last August when I was developing .375 loads, I had to park in the shade. I'd shoot 2 or 3 .375's then put that rifle in the Jeep in the shade. Then I'd shoot a few 7-STW's and switch again. It ain't a quick process dialing in the big fire-breathers. But good things come to those who wait. Guest Colorado Bob
Re: shot the 300WSM today robk------get a 30/06. It's done the job on all those critters you list. I used a 06 in SA on kudu, zebra, impala, etc.-----it will do the job. I use it on elk every year here in Colorado----never had a problem---just have to keep a sharp knife. My plan is to use it on WY moose this fall. The 30/06 is a boring caliber----it just kills everything I shoot at. CB
coles
Re: shot the 300WSM today just look at the name of both 300Winchester Short MAGNUM and the 300 Winchester MAGNUM. i know there are differences but they are pretty close in performance. you would have to ask Strut if you want more detail. but the WSM is goin to be lighter. the shells may be a little more expensive too but if you reload its all goin to be the same. good luck with your decision. I love my WSM. i cant wait to shoot something withit to see how it really performs. Spring Black Bear season is in 6 days so hopefully it will be the time to let her ring!!!!!! Shell prices are close, but the WSM is usually a few bucks more per box. My favourite thing about the cartridge is having the magnum power in a short action rifle. Ballistics are similar as well, the WSM does have the upper hand. Got these from the Winchester site Both are 180gr Supreme Ballistic Tip shells. .300 Win Mag Muzzle: 2950 fps 3478 ft lbs 200 yards: 2586 fps 2673 ft lbs .300 WSM Muzzle: 3010 fps 3621 ft lbs 200 yards: 2641 fps 2788 ft lbs
robk
Re: shot the 300WSM today thanks all i just want a magnum so i am going to buy one. i am leaning toward one over the other but i am still doing my research and asking questions. as for the 30-06 i have a 308 and i can use my dads my 30-06 but the call of the magnum is in my blood lol. it is a 30 cal either way and i wouldn't shoot another caliber or one that has to do with the 30 cal in one way or another lol. i will let you all know when it happens but i am still doing research thanks rob k

bowana
Re: shot the 300WSM today Remember, the data you are looking at is for factory loads. I own both the 300WSM and Win Mag. You can load the Win mag to shoot a little faster (180 Grain .470 ballistic coefficient or better) while maintaining accuracy. It kind of boils down to this.....If you handload, you will lean toward the Win Mag. If your going to buy a new rifle and don't hand load you will probably lean toward the WSM. Either way your a winner!
coles
Re: shot the 300WSM today if you can handload the Win Mag to shoot a little better than the WSM wouldnt you be able to load the WSM to do a little better than that. i mean they shoot the same bullet so wouldnt the ballistic coeffecient be the same for the WSM too as long as they were the same bullet? Guest Colorado Bob
Re: shot the 300WSM today robk------I know a few elk hunters here that shoot a 300 Win Mag & a couple who have a 300WSM. All of them shoot 180 grain Nolser Partitions at elk. IMO there's not a nickel's worth of difference between the 2. Both put the hurt on elk. The 300 Win Mag will out shine the WSM with heavier bullets. A real plus if you ever decide to go to AK on a grizzly hunt. For elk, moose, caribou, etc-----use 180 grain bullets. My 1 & only experience with the 300 Win Mag was on an oryx hunt at the NM White Sands Missile Range. I borrowed a buddy's Ruger 77 in 300Win Mag topped with a 3x9 Redfield----it's a long story on why I borrowed it---but anyway it did the trick on a nice bull. The only problem I found that it was heavy IMO-----I don't think I would want to pack it the mtns on a elk hunt. So with all that said, if I had to choice between the 2. I would take the 300 WSM. But I'm going to stay on the porch with my 30/06 & eat some elk tenderlion. CB Coles----I think if you handload the 300 Win Mag will out preform the WSM. The WSM is just about at the max in factory loads. The case just isn't big enough to add more powder. But at factory loads they are equal IMO---with bullets 180 grain & lighter. Heavier bullets the 300 Mag pulls away again just because the case is bigger-----bigger bullet less room for powder with the WSM.
coles
Re: shot the 300WSM today thanks for clearin that up. but one reason i bought the WSM is because i was tired of always having to have my dad reload for my 7mm-300Wthby. if i forget my shells at home with that thing i can just go and buy some. so thats one reason for the WSM even thought they may not be as common in little mom and pop stores if i ever need some in a pinch. but i love it soo far. bowana
Re: shot the 300WSM today This is one of those times where everyone is right! I own a Browning short trac in 300WSM...it is a hunting machine! I can navigate the blow downs and fire breaks of western Montana with confidence. I have jumped many a bedded bulls and bucks. It has given me great sucess on my two best Mulies to date. But, I have a ton of 300 win mag brass and a good set of Redding dies. I recently decided to take my Weatherby Fibremark (270 Weatherby) and send it to Krieger to have a custom 27" (with fox river brake) cut rifled barrel installed. Custom bedding job also. Once I get it back, I'm sending it back out to have it dipped in realtree camo (whole gun excluding the bolt). This is my Canadian Whitetail/Caribou gun. Now for the 30-06 guy.....for about 70-90 bucks you can have the chamber of your rifle reamed to 30-06 Ackley Improved (40 degree shoulder most common). Shoot some factory loads to fireform the cases to the chamber, reload and WALAH! You just ballistically recreated the 300 H&H mag. When I load mine with AA3100 powder and use 180 grain Nosler Ballistic Tips, I'm only about 40 fps slower than my 300WSM! It is also very accurate. There like the Ol' Jays potato chips.....ya just can't have only one!!!!
