Deb
I have a new house and I need some ideas for plants on the north side of the house which is the front. I know hostas and ferns will do well, but I would like more color than the hostas. Any ideas guys and gals???? Thanks And this in Ohio. BowtechsWife
Re: another gardening question What about Azalea's? They do well is shaded areas and produce bright colors. My mother would always plant Lily of the Valley on the north side of our house. Not much color, but the white flower stands out against the dark green or burgundy plant. Deb
Re: another gardening question Yeah, mom had Lily of the Valley. I'll try Azaleas, too. People do plant the Azaleas in Ohio, but I think they have to be brought in for the winter. Thanks!! This will give me a start.

TxStarr
Re: another gardening question Azaleas need sun ... we had some across the front of the house. One side was gorgeous and the other side was puny. The only difference was the shade. For the north side here in Texas I have Lantana, Kate Jasmine (similar to a gardenia), hibiscus (which do well with small amounts of sunlight), and Vinca (ground cover). [/ QUOTE ] Don't plant azalea in Ohio unless you're willing to devote the time, effort and money to get your soil acidic. azaleas like acid soil, but most of Ohio is alkaline. Daylilies like sun for the most part, but they'll do ok in some shade if it's not too heavy.
