What happened to me and my son

Took my family up to Helen GA...a little Suiss remake town in the North Georgia mountains two weeks ago. My wife and daughter (4) stayed in the truck parked along side the road in a pullout area while myself and my son (8) went and threw some lines in the river. There were a couple of people 150-200 yards down the river from us (shielded by trees) but we were alone in the immediate area that was fairly secluded. The bank was flat next to the river where we were standing and then formed a shelf up to the roadbed level. So more or less when fishing, we had about a two foot rise right behind us on which I put my tackle box.

Well, I was fishing with my son when a pebble rolled down by my foot and I knew I didn't cause it (I thought that maybe my wife had snuck up on me). I turned around and there was a man standing less than four inches from my face. He had a buddy with him that was a few feet away with his back to me looking the other way...in my mind seeming to act as a lookout. My wife saw them park in front of us (out of state tags), they sat in the car for a minute, got out and quickly walk directly to me, which is extremely odd. If they were interested in seeing if we caught anything or what equipment we were using, they could have done so from 20-50 feet away, no reason to walk up on us like that. Plus, protocol and common sense is that you make noise so people know you are coming. Well, anyway, I was startled to say the least and immediately concerned when I saw a knife clipped onto the closest one's pocket. I was unarmed so I wheeled around, put myself between the man and my son, and shoved my hand in the tacklebox. He seemed surprised by my reaction and said quickly "we're just walking around looking". I looked at the tacklebox and my hand and told him "well, you best keep right on walking and looking" and maintained eye contact with the closest one. They seemed to lose interest in walking and looking and immediately left without looking at anything else. They were there for probably less than two minutes including the walk over to me.

It is clear to me that these fellahs were probably up to no good and I turned around one second too early. My wife said she was just about to honk the horn...gee thanks dear, love you too! "By the way dear, I just honked the horn to let you know you were just stabbed!" laugh.gif

I typically carry my pistol with me when fishing but this was a "hey, that looks like a good stretch of water, let's try it out" thing. If I would have had that pistol with me, I would have pulled it without a second thought and been justified in doing so. I wouldn't have pointed it at them unless they ratcheted it up a notch but their actions were completely offensive in nature (at least could be interpreted as that way). Just goes to show you that you don't have to be in an alleyway in a major city at 3 am to encounter people who are up to no good.

If ever confronted with this situation again and you do have you handgun, I would urge you to not only draw, but point and remove the safety (or **** the hammer). Some people can move incredibly fast or he could have a firearm concealed. Best to be fully prepared. Glad everyone's OK.

Exactly, you can't even fish any more without trouble.

When you carry, you have an increased burden not to start fights, etc. You definitely don't want to ever have to pull it. In all the time I had my carry license not once have I had a reason to even think about it. Had I been carrying that day, I would have pulled it out without reservation. I'm kind of like a cop, the last thing I want to do is have to shoot someone. That's how serious this was in my mind.

Stange story, I wonder what they were really up too. Just so you know, the average man can close a distance of 21 feet before you can draw and fire your weapon. It's too bad that at this day an age we have to worry about stupid little statistics like that. smirk.gif

Yeah, good point. I could see both of their hands so my main concern was that knife which I was in arm's length of. I spun out of his arm's length when I pivoted in front of my son and had a backup plan to pick up my son and hit the river had he moved my way at all.

I carry a Kimber Tactical Custom II 1911 model so my natural draw is to have my thumb on the safety. I can drop the safety and shoot before they could have drawn and shot. Which is why I like the 1911 system.

It is just a shame. I didn't want to concern my son so after they left I just told him that they scared me and shouldn't have walked up on us like that. He figured it out and said "they were up to no good, weren't they?". I said I didn't know but even the instinct of an 8 year old knew.

Won't happen again, now my wife understands why I grab my gun and take it with me whereever I go.

VOTE YES for anyone suggesting a concealed carry law in any state!!! And this is from a retired cop. Armed...one and all. make things equal and give them something to think about before they do anything.

I would have reacted the same way. You're lucky you turned around when you did., who knows what they were up to. There are too many random unprovoked acts of violence happening these days around the country. You have to be alert to that fact nowadays, at all times. frown.gif

Re: What happened to me and my son

I'm glad nothing bad happened there.

I fish sometimes between 10p.m and 6 a.m on the river near us. I always pack a hunting knife with me. I have run into some real strange characters at that time of night, and never chance it. I do the same as you did. I lock the eye contact in, and basically put in a hard stare to let them know that any wrong moves will result in retaliation from me.

Glad to hear everything worked out New. I'am glad ya'll stayed safe. It is depressing to think how things are these days, and that it has become so common that your young son knew something was wrong. Back when I was his age, if something like that would have happened I would have been clueless. Getting to where you cant even relax in the good ol' outdoors.
