Guest NWTF
I just won a single shot shotgun from my nwtf banquet and thought that i might use it for turkeys this year. It is a 20 gauge h&r 3 inch with a modified choke. What do you guys think would this work. I have used a semi Browning Auto 5 for a few years but it is just so heavy to carry around. okiedog
Re: Single Shot Shotguns I use to have that exact same gun. Ended up giving to my nephew a few years back for graduation. The only gun that I ever got rid of, and now I wish I had it back. I need something for my wife to shoot, shes alittle afraid of the 12ga. Strut10
Re: Single Shot Shotguns There are 3 of those guns sitting in my safe. You need to do a little recon for shells if you want to have a good turkey gun. IMHO, there's only one shell to buy for turkey chasing with the NEF 20 ga.............. Remington 3" Hevi-Shot #6. Here's the bummer.......they quit making it. However, you can still find them here & there. So stock up when you do. The Rem. Hevi makes the gun a 40 yard turkey buster. Winchester Supreme #5's are good to 30 yds. But they peter out right about there.
Guest NWTF
Re: Single Shot Shotguns I bought a box of Winchester Supreme High Velosity Turkey loads they are 3" shells and are #5. I also bought a box of Federal Turkey loads they are 3" number
LifeNRA
Re: Single Shot Shotguns Nice gun, but. Why would the NWTF give out a 20 gage with a modified choke? I really wouldnt call that a turkey gun. If it had a full or fuller choke, yeah! Then again, the use of hevi-shot or hevi 13 will help! Now if you can use other chokes in it, get the something tighter! Other than that, congrats!

These little singles really do toss a heck of a pattern........even with the modified choke. Hopefully, later this spring, the Strutlets can show you pics of what they'll do. ky_deerhunter_77
Re: Single Shot Shotguns I have the NEF w/ a 12, 16, and 20 ga barrles. Never turkey hunted with it but shot a bird off the gutter of my house at 20 yards w/ #6's and only three holes in it and the rest was in the bird. Just get the bird within 20 or so yards and watch it drop.
Jeramie
Re: Single Shot Shotguns I love the NEF line of SS'ts. Im betting with a 3" mag at 30yds youre still snapping turkey necks!

Gobblegobblebang
Re: Single Shot Shotguns I have one of the same guns in my safe as well. I was going to see if I could have it drilled and taped for chokes but I have not done it yet. All I can say is buy some shells and pattern it do not take anyone’s word for how well there gun shoots(that’s great and all) but every gun shoots differently. Make sure you know exactly how good your personal gun does. I was also going to get a recoil pad for mine singles kick a little especially a small kid. But the advice I gave for this applicaion has worked, without fail, in 3 out of 3 NEF NWTF's. I'm on the verge of calling this one a hard & fast rule. [/ QUOTE ] Before all of today's special turkey guns/turkey chokes came about, that was the way they were hunted,,,,with a single shot "long tom" shotgun. Some had 40" barrel, but most were 32"-36". The 40" was on a Marlin 120MXR which was a pump.
